As part of my ongoing analogue education here's another video I've made documenting my current state of play progress and also mentioning some of the things I have learnt to date. Thanks again for all the help folks! This forum ('Analog Only' in particular He! He!) really is a fantastic resource and a wonderful online community. (I have attempted to spread the word & 'pay it forward' as it were by giving props to homerec in the accompanying vid.)

Well there you go! Yes it could probably get better with a full calibration and alignment. But you are on your way!

Thanks for all your help and encouragement mdainsd although sadly, since making this vid, I went out again earlier to do some actual original recording (as opposed to the pre-recorded music I used for demonstration purposes) and I've gone and knocked the flippin' REPRO/RECORD out of alignment just cleaning the heads before my session! Track 1 and 8 are 'warbling' again ie: not making proper contact. I am pretty cursed this end of late it seems - I'm getting a 'reel' feelin' the Gods are doing their utmost to prevent me from making music since procuring this machine. AARGGH!!!

So. put the tape back on with the stuff on it you used for your video. Then while its playing back fuss with the alignment a little at a time while monitoring track 8. Dont go nuts its small small adjustments. Not sure how ou could knock the heads out of alignment cleaning them? Where the adjusters loose?

Yes, in hindsight I obviously hadn't tightened a screw somewhere. I've pulled the plug for tonight as I've had enough but tomorrow's another day .....
