this was supposed to go to be in my at 4050 thread, i accidentally started a new thread, when i noticed it i edited this thread to include this statement. sorry about that i hate to double post but i'm going to move this to the intended thread to achieve effective responses.

which pattern is the hyper cardiod? i got the mic from a pawn shop, so it didn't come with the manual. it was also stated that the -10 was for loud sources to avoid clipping, drums were given as an example, so it shouldn't be needed for vocals rather it be mic jagger or dmx's? what's the reccomended distance and hight of this mic from the singer/rapper?

You may find the pad very useful on certain vocals - belters and screamers for instance. I don't own a 4050, but usually there a re little graphic pictures of patterns on the switch to tell you which one you are selecting. For example, cardioid looks like a heart, omni looks like a circle, figure-of-eight looks like an eight (duh!). Hypercardioid would look like a cross between cardioid and figure-of-eight - a heart with a little tail hanging off the back.

I haven't checked the specific site, but more and more manufacturers let you download the manuals for their gear as pdf files right from their website. You should check the Audio Technica website - it may have all the answers you need.

thanks littledog

i tried to search for the pdf on a audio technica site, maybe i'll look for another official one. your explanations were most helpful in my venture to understanding this mic.
