I feel like I'm always asking questions and never answering, but I guess that's how you learn.

Using Sonar and a delta 66 omni, I'm trying to record a sound (not wave cause you can import that, ie mp3 or a drum machine sound) out of my sound card and then back in.

The problem is that when I have Sonar open, and I try to play back the sound I want to record - an error message pops up that says the file format is not supported. But it plays fine when Sonar is closed. Can anyone explain this problem?

Is it a Sonar problem or a sound card problem?

Sounds like a user problem. No, seriously, either you are not describing what you are trying to do very well, or you are trying to do something that makes no sense.

Record a sound out of your sound card and then back in? Makes no sense.

Maybe if you explained what your goal is, we can figure out what you should be doing.

ok. Forget trying to record for the moment.

When I have Sonar open, but minimized - I can't play back a regular audio file like an mp3 or a wave. I get that error.

I'm guessing the following scenario:

1) Sonar is open - but minimsed
2) You're trying to play an MP3 with MusicMatch Juke Box (or whatever)
3) You hear nothing

My guess is that Sonar is hogging your sound card (Hey - it's only a guess) and MMJB isn't getting a look in.

I'm not a SONAR user, but is there any reason you can't import the file direct into SONAR? It should be able to import MP3s and WAV files.

There are utilities that will convert MP3s to WAV. MMJB will do this.

Bluesmeister pretty much has it. Sonar is not releasing the audio driver.

While in Sonar, go into Options > Audio > Advanced and click the check box for "Share Drivers with Other Programs." That should take care of it.

No Sonar imports the files fine. It's just when I try to play a song with winamp I get the following windows message.

error - the file format is not supported

It might be hogging the sound card. I don't know.

dachay2tnr and bluesmeister = genius

It worked perfect. Thank you.
