Please excuse me for greenness, but I hope I'm not asking the same thing as everyone else here (but I guess you'll be the ones to tell me...)

Here's the scenario:

I'm just trying to record an acoustic guitar here, so this is what I'm doing...I'm mic'ing an acoustic guitar with 2 mics, then plugging the mics into an amp so I can get enough volume to run it through a compressor, then run the compressor to the recorder. (does this sound okay so far?)

Here's the problem:

My freakin' amp is so damn buzzy that I can't really pull this off without a nasty buzz in the background.

Should I be using a something else instead of the amp? Is this where I should be using a pre-amp? I just don't know. Please help!!! Thanks for any help!

Yeah dude, unless you are going for a particular effect, never record an acoustic through an amp! Put those mics through a preamp before you sent to a compressor. You may need to flip phase on the preamp or hard pan the mics because you may get some weird phasing going on while recording acoustic guitar.

Use two condensor mikes, one at the 12th fret, and one on top of the sound hole. The Audio technica 4033 works pretty good for acoustics, I have heard that the Studio Projects C1 is really very good for the price...

Hey Frank, lose the fuckin monkey.

Yeah, cute but creepy!
:)

Do you really think I should change my avatar?? Maybe I should post a poll, and then evey one can have a say just with one click. I was thinking about changing...

What monkey? All I see is a broken image under Frank's name.... (what format is this avatar in? maybe I need a plug-in)

seems to be an .art file.....you arent missing much......

Yes he is... what are you talking about, my monkey is great...

AVATAR = transfer of soul. So, man, if that's your transfer, enjoy it but don't monkey around.

As to the question about the guitar:

If you can get your hands on the small, but powerful GK amp, it has a speaker by-pass switch/plug.

So, you can use the GK amp but the speaker is off -- sends the amped sound directly to the recorder. I have one of those little GK's which aren't cheap and I used it once to mic electric bass right into the recorder and it worked fine.
