Another Portaone question!

Going through all the recording steps of the manual, but when i get to recording track one, my stop button triggers and won't let me go through with anything? I can't seem to find in the manual what I am doing wrong. Am i recording the wrong way on the tape? Any help would be appreciated.

Further detail: I cannot play the tape, i had to get it past the clear by fast forwarding fifteen seconds, then I stopped reset and zero returned. The stop button goes off by itself with any attempt to play or record.
 
I would almost pay for help. I just want to know if it is the machine or me at fault.

Older units like this often need new belts, because the rubber parts deteriorate over time.
It's a service issue, although a lot of people here open them up and do it themselves.

I opened it up and everything looks good. The belts are clean and running. I took the transport unit out so i could press play and watch the auto stop trigger from the front and the back, but I still can't see whats wrong.
