Another phantom power ?Q?

I've seen discussion of this before but I'm not quite clear on the answer---

I just got an Audio Buddy pre. I just got an MXL 1006. The pre has no independent phantom power on/off for the channels----it's both on/both off. Can I run a 57 thru channel 2 while powering the MXL in ch 1? Any harm to hit a dynamic mic with power?
I have other options (thru Tascam M30 onboard pre) so it's not critical but......

You can run phantom to the SM57 with no problems at all- it doesn't care. Most dynamics aren't bothered by the presence of phantom power in the slightest.

There *are* a handful of high-dollar ribbon mics that _do_ care, and will turn into high-dollar paperweights when you stuff phantom into them: but the chances are very good that you will never encounter one of those in normal budget rock&roll home recording...

okee dokee. Thanks.

BTW--anyone have an opinion of the mic pres in old Tascam boards? Given the choice of the Audio Buddy or the M30, is this a no brainer or were the Tascams ok?

thanks--

The Tascams were probably okay- chances are that they are actually slightly better than the Audio Buddy (they probably have better headroom due to better power supplies, for example). Anyhow, I suspect that they are comparable: there's no hands-down winner here. Try it and see, and let us know what you think: preamp choice is a pretty individual thing!

The pres in the Audio Buddy are better than the 1980s Tascam pres that I used. I wasn't into gear at the time as I am now so I can't speak to individual models.
