Wasn't sure which forum to ask this,-- then thought -- the fact that you are asking still labels you a Newbie!!
So bear with me --- I have had my current setup for about 4 years.
I'm an old fart, with a little money to spend and will be setting up a new DAW in a few months when I move into a new house with a nice office for my little "Studio"
What I do is strictly hobby -- I have no delusions of gradeur but have fun with it!
I do everything a track or two at at time. Record acoustic guitar, (goodall)
Electric guitar (Strat) through a pod and j-station. Bass Guitar (P-bass)
also have a Roland GR-20 Guitar synth. All audio no midi.
The equipment I currently use is:
Audiophile 24/96 card.
A couple of VTB1 pres
RNC compressor
Couple of Oktava -012's
Marshall v67
Behringer b2031 monitors
been very happy with this little setup
but as I think of a new dedicated DAW thinking of what upgrades to make without just wasting money or having a weak link that would make other upgrades wasteful.
Thinking of splurging on a LYNX card
and a few new mics
Here is my question --- would the card be overkill? Should I just stick with the 24/96?
I can afford the LYNX and maybe a couple of new mics, along with a new computer -- maybe a few other toys.
a real upgrade in pres that would make a difference starts getting into more than I want to spend. (I think)
I guess what I'm wondering is what is the "weak link" ---
Any advice from the many talented, brilliant, experienced, gifted kind folks here that would condesend to provide inut.

I think your main area would be mics, maybe a nice Rode mic? The 24/96 card is good, and if your only doing 1-2 tracks at a time, then that should keep serving you well. Maybe you could add some more RAM for your computer? or if your buying a completely new one upgrading it a little to make it that bit more powerful? The list is endless really, but it all boils down to what you need the most. Nothing in that list that you say would be a 'weak link' its all good equipment and you would have no problems with any of it. Any upgrades you do wouldnt be a waste of money really unless you buy something you dont need.
