Deliciously lo-fi and trashy, neo-garage band sound, clever lyrics; I liked it a lot, and it made me laugh. As far as the recording/mix, it sounded like some occasional clipping in the vocals, the bass and the vocals could be brought down a little maybe, so the guitar and drums are a touch more prominent, but then again if the mix is too perfect you might lose some of that garage-chic...

This song ROCKS!! Loved the lyrics and the groove. Can't find a thing I'd change. If books had theme songs, this would have to be the theme song for "The Peoples History of the United States".

Must listen again.

great song

Theron.

Neat tune...
a tad midrangy sounding...
levels appear ok, but I think this song would gain with full fidelity...It'd put you in the Zappa genre;)

pretty fun tune..

I thought it was pretty cool.. Like your other song, it's music to have fun to. :)

If your into that , this song is on the money. I agree with mix about the fidelity.

nice job overall

Hey thanks everyone!

Major - I didn't notice any clipping, but I'll go back and listen. There was a pop on a guitar amp that (I thought) got covered up by a snare hit though - so I didn't fix it. I think the lead vocals could be pulled back a bit. In an earlier mix I had the guitars up a higher and the bass/kick/snare lower. But because the song is not tunefull and relies more on cadence and lyrics, I decided it sounded better as it is.

theron - I like your comments. There's not a thing I'd change in them. :D

mix - I agree about the "midrangy" thing. I tried to get rid of it but I couldn't. Most of it comes from the vocals. But every time I tried to back off the offending freqencies, it sounded muffled - like singing through a closed door. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't understand what "full fidelity" means in this sense. Could you explain?

Sam - you can always be counted on for a good review.

funny tunz, love the bass, and the lyrics, dude. sounds kinda "Davemania" style. he he he he
How do you record the bass?

I agree with the Zappa comment. It's a fun song. I dig the guitar playing also. Would be a nice addition to the school house rock repretoire. Very funny and I like the garage sound for the topic.

I gotta a question for you. How do you get that panned, delayed vocal effect? I hear it on a lot of posts but have no idea how to do that. It sounds like it's the same track on both right and left each with different delay settings??

Thanks Dan (even though I had to prod you) :D There's no limit as to how far I'll sink to get a review.

Who/what is Davemania? I've posted a couple of songs that are borderline "novelty songs", but most of my stuff is not like this. The next one will be different. So this is probably not really what I would consider to be our style.

Anyway... I mic the bass amp. I don't know, I just like the sound better than going direct. Then I spend a lot of time "fiddling with my knobs" to get the sound I want.

I like witty lirics!!! Made me laugh :D

"But you wrote the declaration
can't they cut you some slack" LOL :D :D :D

You know, english is not my native language but I think this is realy clever.

The lead could be in the middle and more up, and I didn't care for tone. It's cool how vocals are on two sides but makes it dificult to listen to. And since this song is realy almost all lirics I think it would be better in the middle. IMHO

"my friend ben" line seems a little flat at times. but may be it's style and it should be that way. You should try and record bunch of people singing it and make it sound like a croud. That would realy rock.

Like mixmkr said this tune would gain from more polished production. Great tune. Is there name for this style? Is this a style? some people mentioned Zappa but I never herd his music so I duno.

And yes it needs some stomping :D (kidding)

cheers

I was trying to say [in a lame way, I suppose], that full fidelity is Eq balanced in a pleasing way....and that when yours is in full fidelity...[or better eq balanced...aka less midrange] , it could be equated with the likes of people like Zappa...

I took some advice and did a slight remix. I re-EQ'd the lead vocals to try to get some of the mids out. I boosted where I cut before and cut where I boosted before. I also took out the hard panning and sent both tracks down the middle.

If anyone cares, please give another listen.

Thanks.

Vocals definitely sound better.

by the way, i maent to tell you a while back that i like the name of your band. it really cracked me up the first time i saw marshamarshamarsha on nowhere.

alrightee

Thats one crazy song. I don`t know too much about American history but i figured out what it was all about. Liked the Sam adams part. As for the tune it rocks, I liked it. I can`t really comment on the mix but with my ears I enjoyed it. I liked the beat.

I like food court manager more. It reminds me of a band called Manic Street Preachers becasue you sing quite high and the movements are quite cool. I like the way you have recorded the vocals. have they been layered more than once? good harmony too. tip top man

Erland

well i care so i gave another listen :)

I like the vocal in the middle better, I think, though maybe not both of them. I'm listenning on different (and cheap) heaphones right now so it's hard to say if the eq made a difference.

One thing I would try is have another voice to come in only sometimes to reenforce some lines.

There is alot one could try to do here it's like a whole new style, for me anyway. It's like rap-rock-comedy or something :D.

cheers

Thanks

erland - thanks for the listen. I forgot you Brits probably don't care as much about US History as we do. Food Court had a double tracked lead only. The chorus had a four part harmony, which might be what you're hearing.

Fed - thanks for caring :D Reinforcing lines is a great idea.

erichenryus - I like the band name too.

i care too. that food court isn't in Hawthorn Mall by any chance is it?

erichenryus - so you looked me up? I think I put my hometown on Nowhere. That's hilarious. Are you really in the city or somewhere nearby?

You pegged it - it's Hawthorn. I was walking through one day and saw a guy sweeping the floor. He must have been 230 pounds and had long curly (yet stringy) red hair. I thought to myself, "He looks like a 230 pound Danny Partridge." Then I just made up a story about him and put it in a song.

Thanks neighbor.

I dig it! The lyrics are great. The overall vibe and singing reminds me of The Offspring, which fits the tune perfect.
