OK - I've been doing my homework and thoroughly scouring this forum, other sites, ebay - everywhere - for info, reviews, prices on these mics.
Some questions : do they work well as single mics? Everyone seems to use them in stereo pairs.
Is $79 ( the cheapest I've seen them, and that's in the US thru Ebay - before shipping) a reasonable price for a new MXL. It sure seems like it.

Any other info on these would also be welcome

thanks

sure, they work fine as single mics........they just work *better* in pairs. :D

seriously, get two, you'll be glad you did.

and that $79 seems a little high--i think you can find the "stereo set" with shockmounts and case for $150, but i don't remember where.

I think I could stretch to a pair at that price - but it's finding somewhere that can ship to the UK....
We can get MXLs here but they're between £80 - £90 each :(
Any ideas?

ah

i didn't know you were in the UK. some things do seem to be a bit more pricey over there. i'm in the US, so i'm not of much use to ya. sorry. :-(

i guess maybe try an online retailer, such as Shreve Audio or something. they may be willing to ship across the pond.

good luck! i know i'm thrilled with my pair of 603's.

Found em at 8th Street for $150 a pair - not including case etc. though, and I don't know yet whether they'll ship to UK.

Any more leads?

It depends on the source. Mono mic'ing is preferred to stereo mic'ing plenty of the time. For example, if an acoustic guitar track is going to be the main focus of the song, you should probably mic in stereo. If it's part of a busy rock mix, you should probably mic in mono. It's always nice to have the option of stereo mic-ing, but if you don't need it, you don't need it.

Spring for a shock mount if you can; you'll end up liking it. Well, at least I ended up liking it. YMMV...

I bought a 1010lt from east coast music in the states. They were real nice guys and shipped to the UK, although it was a hassle organising the whole thing.

Good luck finding somewhere that ships - and when you do, PM me! I'd like to see if I could get a pair too. ;)

Try the ADK SC-1 from Turnkey. It's practically the same mic as the MXL603S but it only costs £59. :)
