I have a green light on the connection but I cant get anything else. I have cubase installed and keyboard hook up with a 1-in/1-out USB MIDI interface cable. I have the midi out on my keyboard plugged into the midi in on my tascam. Then of course the usb cable that came with the tascam plugged into the computer from the interface. Whats going on? I cant get the Midi light to light up, only the green USB. Sorry if this is a dumb question. I have been busy all day but want to see the quality I can get out of this interface!! thanks for the help

Just an update. I plugged in my mic and the green signal would light up meaning it was picking up some audio. But I could it would not record anything in to cubase. Im guessing my problem in the first paragraph has something to do with the keyboard trasmitting. It is a yamaha paul williams. I push the trasmit button for midi but there is still no signal on the interface??

It sounds like either a problem with your keyboard, or a problem with the cable. You need to have Cubase running and a midi track armed for recording (input coming from the correct device, record enabled, and monitor button selected). When you hit keys on your keyboard, you should see the midi light on the US-122 (I think) and see a midi signal detected in cubase.

The keyboard is brand new and is very nice, I doubt its busted but maybe. Whats the monitor button I need selected? Is there something I need to enable on my computer or in the cubase program that could be causing this problem. If there is, I cannot find it?? Is there any other programs that will allow me to record? Maybe I should just try another program, but it needs to be free. I need to be able to download it. I dont care if it is a demo or not, just aslong as I can use it to make sure everything works. (Besides FL) thanks

I'm not exactly clear on what you are trying to do. You do understand that midi is not sound, right? It is data (instructions that tell a sound module what to play). Therefore, when you midi midi into Cubase, you won't hear anything. You'll have to have the midi output to a VST instrument, general midi, or back out to your keyboard/sound module. I'm not trying to talk down to you, it just seems to be a point of confusion for some people (myself included when I first used midi).

Anyway, direct monitoring should be enabled on the US-122. Go into the Device Setup menu in the Devices menu. Make sure midi is configured properly: The US-122 should be setup as the default midi input device. On the specific midi track you are recording to, I think you need to enable recording (the button with the black dot which turns red when you click it) and you also need to have monitoring enabled (the button with the speaker icon that turns orange when you click it). For each midi track you can select the input (choose any input) and output (pick general midi or a VST instrument, as it sounds like you don't have a midi cable going from the US-122 midi-out back to the midi-in on your keyboard). Beyond that, I'm not sure that I can be much help. Again, make sure you don't have a bad cable.

I am very new at this so I will take all the constructive criticism I can get. When I go to the sound tuner on my computer I get now sound so my computer isn’t picking up anything. I am currently not next to my equipment but will try to mess with it when I get home. Thanks for the help, I will update around 2 hours from now to let you know where I am at with changes, thanks again. By the way, were you saying that I need to run a MIDI out of my keyboard and into the interface, then another one back into the keyboard making two Cables? Sorry got confused there. I am currently using a 1-in/1-out USB MIDI interface cable. I am not sure if that is correct because it runs into a smaller interface that has a USB plug that I am not using but just plugging one MIDI cable into my keyboard and the other into the interface. (Could I just run some AUX cords out of my board into the Interface instead? If so, which will generate a better recording?) Thanks again for you're help and patience. You will have to excuse my horrible post; I am very bad at explaining. I have just been waiting to do this for so long; the band can’t record unless I figure this out. I don’t know if you have heard of the group Dispatch but we are like them in the way that they are completely illiterate on the technology side of music these days.

Ok, I got my computer to pick up the audio. Now all I have to do is figure out how to record into cubase. (I am only refering to the mic, I have yet to attack the keyboard.) I did everything you said for the settings in cubase. I am not sure why it is not working. Should there be some kind of meter that tells me in cubase if I am recieving any audio. I see the "In" with the red bar and the "out" with the green. But it picks nothing up when I record. But when I mess with the "bnk" or "prg" the green bar moves. I still must be doing something wrong. I will keep at it. If you think of anything hit me up, thanks. peace.
