another A/D question

LET'S SAY:

i have a mixer with 24 direct outs...and a have a digi002 rack.

on the Digi002 rack, i am offered 8 analog inputs and 8 digital inputs via ADAT.
through my struggles and journeys, ive seen that:

if i had an octopre, i could get an A/D card for the 8 channels to ADAT for like 200 bucks....

how come the best i can find for an 8 Channel standalone D/A converter (i dont need preamps, or it to come near my computer) is around 2,000

based on how i am currently set up, the quality of my converters isn't my main issue...i'd like to have a few more inputs...but not for that price, while the rooms still aren't treated, etc....

any ideas?? gear?? links?? tips?? hate mail?? jokes??
 
mind you, ive done post searching for answers...

most questions are: what is an a/d converter or why are mine not good enough....

if there's a relevant thread, please help direct me to it
 
Why don't you go on ebay and get an old adat machine? It has 8 sets of converters and adat output. You can get them for $150. You could get one even cheaper because you don't need the transport to work. The transprot is what always crapped out on the things, you just need one that powers up.
 
jesus, thinking back on it the first decent (or i thought at the time) studio i went to when i was a lot younger...that's what the guy was running

i think it was like mixer->adat->core card type set up
 
You can also score Alesis AI3s fairly cheap, not for $150 though. Maybe $200-250. They are 24 bit converters, I think the same as the last version of ADAT, maybe newer :confused:
 
but also line ins if your pre's are better.
 
m-audio octane is 8 channels mic/line, with preamps to ADAT. about $600 i think.
