OK.
I am trying to use my 414 to record my daily pracice sessions. I tried to set it up to record by reading the instructions in the manual but it didnt come out right. First there was only sound in the left channel and second when I go to listen to what I recorded(in my home stereo) the soud was really slow. I remember reading somewhere that the Tascam 4-tracks record at a slower pace. How do I set it up to where I can just plug in my guitar form my amp, hit record and thats it. Why do I have to go through all of that other stuff just to record one track?? I guess I am missing something. I would really appreciate anything anyone could tell me. thanks. J

The Tascam 424 runs at normal pace and double speed. I'm fairly sure the 414 runs at double speed only. I'd guess the solution is to mix down to a cassette deck. I assume the 414 mixes down at normal speed, otherwise I don't see how you can use it.

the tape you use in the 414, can be used inanother tape player but, whatever you rec on channel 1 will only come out on the left, track2 on the right, and you will not be able to hear what was recorded on channel 3&4 ( it will be on side 2 backwards) So you got to mix down to a external tape deck, cdr burner, minni disk, this way you can set the pans correctly.

Or you can record with two mics-- ch1 L / Ch2 R. And when you play the tape in another deck it will be stereo.
