Just starting out playing with an analogue 4-track to record demos with my band. Just wondering what sort of equipment I need to transfer the music recorded on tape, to digital so I can mix it on the computer using something like Cubase. The 4-track I'm using is a Yamaha MT400. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the BBS.

I assume you want to get the individual tracks into the comp rather than just a stereo mix? That could be tricky as your 4 track doesn't have direct outputs for each track.

Looking at the spec I don't think you have any other outs or inserts that could be used as direct outs for all 4 channels either. You have inserts on tracks 1 and 2 so you may be able to get direct outs from those by putting a jack plug half way in. I'm not sure for definite this would work with your unit though and like I said that's only two simultaneous mono outs.

Maybe someone who's used the unit might have a solution but looking at the spec it doesn't look doable to me.

I own a (neglected) Yamaha MT100 mkII and that has direct outs on each channel (pretty rare for a basic 4 track in my experience), you could probably pick one of those up off ebay for $50 or so.

You'd then need a soundcard with 4 inputs, the M Audio Delta 44 is a decent quality budget choice. Of course once you have the interface you'd probably be better off just getting some outboard preamps or a mixer and recording direct into the comp anyway, but perhaps you just like the sound of the 4 track?

Anyway, I hope I've been of some help.
