Analog to Digital

Ok.... I have an analog mixer with 4 xlr inputs I want to expand this by adding 8 more.

My question is this, I want to use my analog mixer, hook it up to a presonus 10 x 10 and the the presonus into my computer.

First, is it possible for me to hook up my analog mixer to the presonus digital interface and then into my computer? If it is possible, how would this be done?

Also if it can be done, will the audio I run through the 4 xlr inputs on my analog mixer travel through the presonus converting it to digital before it gets to the computer?

I hope this isn't confusing, it is just that I have a yamaha mixer that is only a year old and it is analog, but now I am going digital and I heard that I could just use a digital interface to route the audio to my computer. So basically expanding my setup as well as going digital. I just don't know how it would be done.

So any help on combining the two worlds of recording would be nice. Thanks!

Yep

mixer analog outs to analog ins on the presonus, either XLR or 1/4" whichever you have.

Yep, it's just that simple.

thanks, your directions were perfect. Had it up and running in less than 5 minutes.

Now that I have it hooked, combining the two makes perfect sense.

Once again thanks for the awesome reply.

Are the preamps on the Yamaha better than the presonus? Why not just use the pre's of the Presonus?
Do you have direct outs from every channel on your yamaha or are you sending the main outs into the presonus?
If you dont have direct outs, your not recording a "dry" signal but all your eq's and volume adjustments will be recorded.

Direct outs

Mike,

Ya each channel has direct outs. That's how I am running the two together.
Seems to be running fine. But there is one issue that I have run into with using the 4 xlrs on my yamaha. When using those inputs my recordings are coming through really hot...too much gain. I am guessing that by putting the presonus in the signal chain, that this is a gain staging problem. I am wondering if I have to get both levels on the yamaha and the presonus set to a decent output, before recording it into the computer.

Any help with this issue would be appreciated. Thanks!

Look to see if your preamps have a pad and just use that. Your presonus might also have a pad of some sort. I'm not so sure it is a gain staging problem in the strictest sense, unless one of your pieces is -10dBv and the other is +4.

Pads

I am not sure what a pad is, sorry I am still new at this. I Looked through the manuals and doesn't say anything about pads. Just fill me in about pads when you have the time. Thanks!
