analog to ADAT?

I have an analog 12 track mixer 1/4 line outs on each channel. Can I send the line outs to an ADAT so i can record on to it? sorry but i dont understand anything with digital. Can I record from an analog mixer to an ADAT and then mix from the ADAT to the analog mixer to a dual cassette deck SOMEONE EXPLAIN this to me please.

Ok thanks, I've jsut been looking at ADAT's and not all have 1/4 inch inputs and outputs. Now i just have to find one for cheap.

most adats have rca plugs in the back, two for each track, one in, one out..... there are snakes out there with rca-1/4" or you can use a balanced elco conector.
 
The Black face Adat's have 1/4 inch inputs and outputs. The XT's have RCA. Both have the ELCO connectors. It sounds like you are looking to buy a used or new Adat. I've seen the Black face's for as little as $300. The big difference between the different Adat's is the BF is 16 bit the first XT are also 16bit and the new ones are 20bit. The hook up would be out of the boards Direct outs to the adat. Then the output of the adat to either the tape returns on the board or to the channels themselves. Good luck

Yea im gonna be looking for a used ADAT now, only problem is the cost so much for me, it'll take me a couple months just to save up enough to get one probably

make sure you find out how many hours it's had on the head, and if it's an old one, find out the last time it was serviced (if it was).
 
If it's a blackface machine, you can view the head-on hours by holding the SET LOCATE button and pressing STOP.

Given regular maintenance, an ADAT works well for a personal studio. Make sure a used one you consider has been regularly serviced. If it's been run into the ground, you're going to spend quite a bit of $$ getting it back up to snuff.
