when engineers mix through analog mixers using external effects, i never understood how they render the track with the effects still on it. also how do you render tracks with the external effects on it when u mix on a DAW using external effects

Two says. Aux send/return or Insert. The mixers in most DAWs are actually modeled after the same paradigm. The only difference is, where in a DAW you can insert multiple instances of the same plugin, in the hardware world, you have to purchase multiples of the same box if you need them to be on more than one track (as inserts) or on different aux busses... obviously.

[edit] Holy shit that was my 1000th post! Now I feel older :p

signal goes from the multitrack recorder, be it tape, hard drive, ADAT, etc. to the mixer...then it gets sent out to the processors and back to the mixer

then the stereo mix gets sent back out and recorded, thereby capturing whatever you did to the tracks

The two track isn't "rendered". It's played back and recorded in real time, sent out to an analog mixer where analog based effects can be added via AUX sends and returns. Any plugins that are applied to a track will function just like the analog ones in that they're doing their thing in real time. You can send the analog SUM back to a stereo track in whatever software multitracker you're using or go to a different device like a DAT or Masterlink or tape deck or whatever.

man, it's been a while since I've done any analogue mixing. That was fun =) *sigh*
