An Yamaha 16 track for less than 1000$??

At NAMM this time, they are releasing the AW16G(I read that it's due in august). It almost seems too good to be true.

I've read about the great features that this model has. 16 tracks at 24bit and 8 simultaneous tracks and all the other standard features that most 16 trackers do.

Has anybody seen a demo or ..whatever of this product. I was almost thinking for going for Korg D1600 or Boss BR 1180 and saw this.

I'm waiting for some input before I buy.

Haven't heard about that new Yamaha 16 track; however, I do use the Yam 2816 and it has 8 faders that double up to do 16 tracks. I seldom need more than 8 tracks for my work. But, it's nice to have the tracks there.

The sound quality of the 2816, as well as the 4416, is VERY good. I'm amazed at remastering some old tapes done on a Tascam 8 track and my MD8 discs -- they come out great when put into 16 bit sound. I also have 24 bit but usually run @16 bit and go right to CDR.

If you can get to review a 2816, hear it, see it work, you might like the box, as well as this new model coming out that you mentioned. The 2816 sells for just under 2k -- I hope the converters in the unit you mentioned are as good as those in the 2816 and 4416.

Thanks for the site; I looked at the unit and think it is missing the DSP that comes with the 4416 and 2816. I'll bet the converters are not the same. 1K less in price means 1K less in quality.

But, I'll bet the unit will sell and do a decent job.

The automation is what made the Yamahas special, and I dont think you will get that feature on this one, I would look into the Akai dps16 for 899.00, It has exelent features and is easier to learn to do well.

Hi Darrin,

I don't think the Akai DPS 16 comes with a CD burner (right?). But, I read that the Yamaha AW16G comes with a burner, too.

Ok I went and did a spec to spec review. The big one is that even though it has 24 bit converters, the recorder resolution is still only 16 bit 44.1khz. It does have efx, but they are limited. I think they tried to create a bridge between the Md8 owners and the AW4416/AW2816 owners. After looking at the specs of the new one im not sure Id get it. For a $1000 buck I can build a pc and a used Human Interface controller. To me it isn't in the same league with the other options out there. It might me a great expander for an md8 user.

I agree with you. If I remember, the 2816 has 32 bit DSP. There are lots of dials and movements to be made on the screen and there is very, very subtle tweaking. I'm just getting used to it as opposed to the MD8 and "instant" EQ up/down/middle.

I have to believe that the 2816/4416 have "better" FX sounds. Yamaha is great for FX but if you want the "good PFFAATT" stuff, it costs more.

I assume You have a computer dude. How is it you can post here without one.

How do you master witout running the signal through your rack? I find a burner on board useless.
 
Since I have a PC with a 24 bit sound card and a good burner, Id stick to digital transfers anyhow. Im pretty sure that Sound forge 5.0 is a better editor than what the aw16g has onboard.
