an odd amp question

well, i have a small crappy amp. i like the way it sounds when i play through it, especially with the drive switched on with a distortion pedal. i really don't want to deal with the hassel of micing it everytime i want to record. so i unhooked the actual speaker on the amp. then i connected the amp through the LINE OUT to my mixer. it sounds just like i'm playing through the amp's speaker. does this make any sence or am i just fooling myself into thinking i don't need to mic my amp?

Sounds like your amp has a direct box built in and that makes sense.

yeah it's a prehistoric dean markley.. it's got a line in, line out, and phones jack. i hope it's what i'm looking for. actually at the moment i'm goofing around with it to see if it's just as good as mic'ing. have u ever heard of something like this being as good as mic'ing... btw.. i also have a behringer ultra-g DI box, this would bite if i don't even need it.

well here's the thing... the back of the amp is open, so i can see the 2 wires which connect to the amp's speaker, i just unhooked 'em. on the front of the amp are 3 jacks: input, line out and phones. from the line out i plug directly to my mixer. my mixer plugs into my soundcard.

That would be the way to do it. If it sounds good to you, go for it. My guess is the 57 will sound better. ymmv

A shure sm57, I assumed you would mic it with one of those. Your Milage May Vary

oh.. i gotcha. well instead of a shure sm57 i have a shure pg48 (horrible) and a cad condensor CAD1200 (i think that's the model number). which one of these 2 would you use is u were mic'ing?

I have never heard either of those mics. I have heard horrible things about the PG mics, but I have never heard one. I had a Cad E200 at one time, it was a good mic, but I wouldn't use it to mic a cabinet. (to high-endy)

Not those mics with that amp. Most mics that people have will handle most amps that people have. You aren't going to hurt anything with tha Dean Markley. That Cad should be able to handle being inside a kick drum.

what would it take to damage a mic with an amp??? i really don't want to ruin any mics of mine.

If it sounds like the mics it is designed to sound like, it will do a decent job on guitar.

You might want to try micing the amp and using the line out both, I do this with a small Fender amp and it gives me a lot fuller sound.

hey thanks for the advice, yeah i'll hook the speaker back up and use the phones jack for it does cut out the speaker when it's plugged in.

i'm a big fan of using both mikes and line ins while laying down tracks-i've had pretty strong luck so far..

If you run your small crappy amp turned up loud with the speaker disconnected, you will likely soon have a small crappy amp with a blown output transformer.
