an inexpensive way to gain digital in for a vs880ex?

Art is supposedly making a A/D converter- actualy a A/D converter with a tube front end. Should be a little over $200 for two channels.

If youv'e got near $500, go for the dbx 386 tube mic pre with SPDIF out.
 
i'd like to bypass the crummy sounding vs inputs, and go digital in. i'm in the market for an outboard effects unit, i was thinking about either going with a compressor (dbx) with digital outs, or a lexicon unit, but really don't know enough about either to make a decision.
any ideas?
