An Alan Hyatt question I'm sure people would like to see

I felt this deserved its own thread after going through some of the other threads...

Alan, for the sake of argument, there was no Studio Projects or PMI group or whatever. No C1, C3po T3 or R2D2 No nothing. You were just a nobody who just wanted to get a good large diapgram mic to do some home recording with.

Now, what mic in the **same price range** between and around the C1 and C3 would you buy? (So you cant just say a U87 or something)

No comparing with your mic's, no C1 endorsements... ... brand and model... top 3 if you like... maybe a reason why?...

I will be happy to answer that. For LD's, I like the NT2, V67G, C414(but that may be to pricey for this comparison), Marshall 2003, and again a little more money, I like the TLM103.

On SD mics, I like the SM57, and SM58, and the AKG460. I also like the Sony EMM23FIII on acoustic guitars, and the Sony ECM535 and 536.

the $79.00 nady condeser mic is AMAZING! It is good for absolutly NO application what soever. Well, is does make a good weight for a trotline when you're setting hooks on the river.

If your budget stretches to $400, I'd add the GT AM62 tube mic set to that list (see the "Great Mics, Cheap Prices" thread that is current) and of course the Rode tube mic set. And if you aren't stuck on condensers, you might consider the EV RE20, the Sennheiser 421, and perhaps the Shure KSM32.

Oh, And

Following Mark on dynamics, you wouldn't even know it with a Sennheiser 441; STILL don't have one myself, BUT I PROMISE myself it's the next dynamic I buy! So cheap but good condenser manufacturers (we know who you are ), quite driving-down those condenser prices and come-out with a cheap but really good dynamic; feel free to make it with the 441 in the back of your minds!

Hey RE, that's a great idea! I wonder why no one's bothered to clone a SM-7, an RE-27 or any of the Sennheisers and shit 'em out at bargain prices. THAT would be cool.

Track, my man! I just bought an RE27 tonight -- my beloved is going to give me a look. Talk about a bargain; someone had just put it up on ebay WITH the 309A mount (which is about $110 by itself), in looks-new-to-me condition for $350. Yes, yes, yes.

AND, since I sold my RE20 to my office-mate and dear friend Larry, I'll be able to borrow it back to do some side by side comparisons between the older and newer versions of the mic. I'm hoping that the RE27 really is an improvement on the old standard, but people in the radio world are slow slow slow to change when they find something they like (the RE20).

I'll let you know in a few weeks what my impressions are.
