Ampeg "gemini" or "reverberocket" 20watt tube amps as good as old fender amps (IMO) for a third the price.

lesser known brands

im surprised no one mentioned traynors.... not the new ones but the vintage ones.... they are mostly marshall clones... well marshall like.... try a YGM3

but all the old tube traynors are awesome and still not to the price of competitors....

check out all mid '60's ampegs.... i have a few vintage amps... but my 65 reverbarocket 2 is the sweetest sounding amp ive ever had... well the 50 watt small chassis Marshall was also sweet... and my traynot ygm3 was to die for...

good luck

So long as you use good speakers ( not a laptop) you can usually find YouTube videos with guys using most amps out there. It is a great way to hear the tone for yourself.
Harmony central reviews can be helpful, but often there are kids offering a "professional" opinion. Like when someone said the the Danelectro fab distortion was the best pedal on the planet. :laughings:

BTW, he said the he was playing metal. I don't see where a Sunn, Ampeg or some of the other aformentioned amps fit in.
I would just stick with a tube amp for sure with 2-12's or a head & 4-12 cab.
For Metal, I really like Peavey's 5150 or 6505. The triple X gets hissy to me.

By the same token, my favorite amp of all time is the Peavey Classic 30. Has shimmery clean tones and will knock your lights out with a good distortion pedal.

Good luck
