Amplifier to recorder noise filters

A colleague loaned me a small interface (2rca to mini jack) that reduced static and noise incredibly. He cannot find another device and I have searched the internet endlessly. Can anyone advise me what they are called, and more importantly how can I get one ?

No , this is not related to a computer input, as I am only using backing tracks with Multiple Mics and guitar, all fed into an amp, and then via 2rca to a normal voice recorder.
