i'm aware of the usefulness of searching, but i've never found a single repository for a serious wealth of tube info (that link you sent me is cool, but i have at least 15 or 20 types of tubes not listed there that i'd like to find out more on). thanks for that one, though.

I've tried out every OD pedal for the last 20 years and none of them sound as good as my amp cranked up to about 7.

POWER TUBE SATURATION!!! That's where it's at.

you must have a *lot* of time and money on your hands ;)

But seriously, there are some really great od pedals out there. Some that I've tried and like are the maxon 808 and the vs route 66. But my favorite recent (and affordable) od is the reverend drive train 2.

On another note, have you tried any kind of power soak? The new dr Z airbrake is supposed to be fantastic: http://www.musictoyz.com/drzair.htm

i like a marshall guv'nor to get marshall-like tone out of a fender. that, or if one wants a big sound and is willing to pay some bucks, a mesa boogie v-twin. those things are amazing.

Looks like I'm forced to send you to the Asylum. Be careful in there: lots of crazy folks.

I'm not kidding!

:D

Try going to www.guitaramplifierblueprinting.com That site has links to several tube sellers like watford valves and vacume tube valley. Also, lots of reviews. Its very convenient.

The EL34 is the classic marshall sound, but is definitely not substitutable in an amp geared for 6L6's. I love EL84's, but they do not sound like an EL34, if that's what you want. I have a modified Fender Hotrod Deville that I've put Yellowjackets with EL84's in. Now it acts like a Class A amp. Very, very bright until you reset the EQ. Think Vox AC30 sound. Definitely not Marshall EL34 sound. I can get a very Marshally sound out of my Carr with 6v6's, but 6v6's have the wrong plate voltages. Again, substitution problems.

Go to the site above and ask Miles your question. Great guy. Very helpful.
