Amp to 4-Track?

I remember hearing that you should never connect the output from your amp directly to your recording device or there would be dire concequences. This makes sense because I can reach the peak levels on my 4-Track by hooking my bass directly to the 4-Track so I'm sure having that amplified 1000X probably wouldn't be healthy for the recorder.

My question is, is there something I can hookup between the amp and the 4-Track to reduce the amp output to a safe level so I don't damage the 4-Track. Or am I just better off mic-ing the bass amp anyways?

I'm new to this and any help would be much appreciated.

You would generally use an instrument preamp or a DI box between the instrument and recorder if you want to record 'direct'. Micing the cabinet is another good method.

There are DI's that can handle a powered load but there really isn't any reason to go that way unless you want a lot of options for different tones.
