I dont hide behind Greg or anyone else..and comments made in here certainly dont effect how I feel about my gear or my abilities or a need to reinforce them in print

and we're not past anything..we were never at anything to go past..I only came into this thread as Ive subscribed to it... lol


you do come across as an audio/gear snob..thats fine, its no biggy..but it is a bit like groundhog day, and i still believe its down to the person and not the equipment 90% of the time and Ive yet to hear anything in HR thats going to change that opinion

Hey...I just didn't get why you brought Greg into it.
I got no gripes with Greg about anything...and I got no gripes with you either.

The only *gear* I'm rather strong-voiced about is good quality tube amps. So maybe when some folks (intentionally or unintentionally) get all puffy about their sims-n-pods being "as good" as tube amps...I get a little puffy back. ;)
I don't ever go around throwing down brand-names and whatnot about any of my other gear just to put down anyone (not that all my other gear is high-end/high-priced), so that's why I don't see how you would say I'm an audio snob...?
I think I've said it many times that whatever works to give you the sound you want...that's it.
I may scoff at some n00bs talking up some $59 preamp and how great it is...:laughings:...but that certainly doesn't make me (or anyone) an audio snob.

AFA my tube amps...yes, I have some high-quality tube amps that I'm proud of. It took me a few years to get to a point where I could afford them. It's not JUST 'cuz they cost a lot...they really DO sound quite good and much better than all of the low-budget, middlin' amps I've had in the past. I think I can safely say that without being a snob about it. :)
I'm sure you have things that you worked hard to get and are then proud of them.

im just saying you come across as a bit of a snob sometimes..its not that big of a deal just a bit tiring..Im not saying your the worst or anything...but we all do seem to go round in circles sometimes

nothing wrong with entry level gear..and in the right hands it can produced great stuff....thats all..
 
Everything about the Jeff Lynne ELO sounds like a sim. He creates & uses signature sounds from drums to harmony vocals that have an edge of synthetic about them that is enough to turn me off any post Wood ELO.
I assume that apart from maybe a piece of Rockman gear here & there that there's wasn't much available for him. he just did things in a certain way.
As to sims in HR - well - if you can't afford the gear you use the sim. If you can afford the gear but like the ease of using a sim you use the sim.
If you can use a sim that fools most of the HR punters most of the time - you use the sim.
Me, I don't, apart from the BDI21 for my bass, becasue I don't have the good gear. Then again - I don't get a good mic'd amp sound from my amps either.
 
Miro, for what it's worth, I have regular, recordable access to Marshall, Diamond, Krank, Sovtek, Bogner, Egnater, BadCat, Randall, Roland, HiWatt, and Ampeg amps. I don't own any of them, but I can put my grimy hands on them all I want. I haven't tried every sim out there, so I can't recommend "the best" to you. All I can say is that from what I've used, Guitar Rig and ReValver are my favorites.

I don't know what a "nice sim" is. That's what demos are for. The "nice sim" for me will be the one that sounds right for my music. Are you asking because you're interested, or are you trying to draw me in to this "discussion"?

I'm downloading the ReValver MKIII.V demo to check out. I didn't know this was a Peavey product.
What's the main difference between the ReValver MKIII.V and the ReValver HP...?
It looks like the MKIII.V is the main one (it's almost three times the file size).
Not too expensive for the MKIII.V - $250

I see that Guitar Rig has several apps...Guitar Rig - Pro, Player, Kontrol...???
I'll download the Pro when I'm at work (faster connection) 'cuz that thing is over 300MB.
Kinda' pricey too...$600??? :eek: I might wanna just buy another tube amp instead for that price! :D ;)
 
Honestly, you don't have to bother with either sim because you automatically will find a way to hate it.

In my little corner of the home recording world I use both real mic'd amps and amp sims to get a variety of sounds

As to what is a good sim, or a good amp for that matter, the answer is the one that get's you the result you want.

I like Vox amps in the real world and I have a couple of them, Plenty of people would say they're crap and Marshall or Orange or "insert Brand Here" would be a better choice. Those may all be great amps but for me are not what I want and so of no use

I use waves GTR for sims, Plenty of people woul say this is crap and Guitar rig or, amp room or "insert brand name here" would be a better choice, or even just use my real amps. Those might all be great suggestions but are not what I want and so of no use.

Most Amp sims are free to try and so if anyone is interested in what is a good sim their is nothing to be lost in trying a bunch and deciding for yourself. sure they need tweaking but for the sake of fairness how many people buy an amp, having never played through it, turn it on and find it works in every case and every song without changing anything?
There are pages of posts on hundreds of guitar/amp forums about, what's the best amps, what amp should I buy, mods, tweaks and tricks to get a good sound out of a real amp as well as hundreds of questions on forums like this as to which mic, how to position it, how to gainstage to make a real amp sound good.

Treat an amp sim the same way you would a real amp. Learn it, think about what you are trying to achieve and how you need to set up to achieve that and, IMO, the results can be very good especiallly if you put real pedals in front of it, and if you really feel the need to record air being pushed, you can always mic your monitors and record the sim back into the DAW. The results can be quite interesting

I was asking for real.
Everyone says how high-end sims really ARE that good...but people then only mention the sims they happen to have.
I've tried many in the past that sucked, but would like to hear which of the latest ones are truly on-par with good quality tube amps...not just sims that sound OK as a sim.
So when someone mentions using nice/great sims...it'd be good to know which ones they are really talking about.

Someone else was asking the same thing.

Yeah...you're probably right.
You'll have to pry my tube amps out of my cold dead hands.

I'm also going to go now and uninstall/delete all the plugs in my DAW, get rid of all my instrument samples and all my MIDI files...because I'm not open-minded about using digital substitutes no matter how good they sound.

God forbid I ever try out something new on the sim front....and still not like it...
 
True. I'll demo a few this month and get back to you on what I like. I also like Vox and Orange amps, and not a ton of super high gain stuff, so that will influence my decision. I don't know which are good. I've recorded with a few in the past, but I can't remember which ones. I'll do some demoing and see what I like and let you know what I think is a good one!

Yup, exactly. No one's suggesting you get rid of your tube amps, but you are a total gear snob. I called it, like forever ago, but I aint mad at ya. Just admit it and drop the charade. It's okay. It's far more respectable to just be who you are than pretend to be open-minded when you clearly aren't.
