I use Cool Edit and I am currently recording some guitar tracks. I'm going to my electric tracks soon and I was wondering what you guys use to get your tones. Like what effects pedals, amps, cabs but I'm mostly interested in amp simulators. Especially those I could use in Cool Edit.

are you looking for some software you could use to edit the tracks once they are recorded or are you looking for something to add to your signal chain to be recorded first?

There really isn't anything better than micing the amp speaker when it comes to over driven guitar sounds. you may get away with clean tones though. line 6 makes some pretty good amp modelers, pricy though.

A used POD or POD 2 will give you good results and is not too expensive.

Lately I've been using a Pod xt for my amp models, running through the cabinet and mic sims in Guitar Rig (Native Instruments). Together this combination is pretty nice. But there is no modeller that sounds like the real thing, the best you can hope for is close. I think the Pod xt is pretty darn good though, at this point.

I know it doesn't look like anything special, but I have been very impressed with the Korg Ampworks for Guitar.

If you can play with one at a local music store, check it out. I spent about 30 minutes with it locally before buying it. No, it doesn't have a super massive digital memory bank for a zillion user memory locations, but it does come with a paper template for jotting down your settings. :)

It is simple. VERY simple. I'm liking simple these days. :) Check out the Korg website for a pretty cool video and some sound samples.

HTH.

I'm currently using The V-Amp Pro,Amplitube,RockAmp Legends and Guitar Rig.I had the PodXT and returned it within a week and ended up sticking with The V-amp Pro,I love the Digital(s/pdif)out.I do mostly Metal and couldn't be happier with it..Also,the other night I got to hear a few of my tunes I did with Software amp sims and the V-Amp Pro side by side on a sweet set of KRK Reference speakers and I thought the V-Amp Pro sounded WAAAY better..Good Luck,if you wanna hear Amplitube in action heres my link, the 1'st 2 Songs were done with Amplitube(Sim./Soft.) and the others were done with The V-Amp Pro http://songplanet.com/leadgtrplayr

I'm actually looking for software I could use to apply to a recorded track. I have ReValver and I find it's really cool but mostly for more classic tones. I don't like it for the Metal I play and the heavy rock I'm experimenting with.

Besides that I have a Digitech GNX2. It's really interesting but I can't quite get the tone I want from it. I'm thinking about the BOSS Metal Zone but I'd really like to use the GNX but somehow get the tone I want. Or use a software solution.

My only problem with a software solution is that I don't know how to hear how it sounds as I play.

The sound I'm looking for is very tight and crunchy but without too much highs. Like the crunch of classic Metallica with a more new age edge. I could only imagine that would be with less highs. But when I reduce I lose the cruch. I want it deep but with lots of palm muting crunch.

I suppose you all need to ask me questions about what I just said before you can answer them. I'm sorry if I'm confusing but it's the best I can explain.

one of the best sounds i ever heard was a pro studio guitar pl;ayer
in a big studio (being recorded to a studer if i remember) ....
anyway - all he had was a pignose amp and a few pedals.
he could do clasical it seemed thru blast out metal rock.
but he was a very talented man.
