I've got a Mesa Boogie triple rectifier 3-channel solo head. I've been using it to record and live, so it gets the shit kicked out of it volume-wise on occasion (hey, it's not my fault the best tone comes out right at 8-9.5 / 10!). Of late, it has begun to make an interesting noise that sounds something like if you plug a lower-quality cable in and wiggle it around (kind of like a light wind blowing on a cell phone mic, except quieter).
The sound isn't related to anything plugged into it, as it happens at the same volume & frequency (all the time) no matter what's plugged into it. It doesn't seem to be affecting the tone at all, as it still sounds like a goddamn beast. The volume of the amp doesn't seem to affect it either, and the volume of the pre-amp doesn't seem to be related either.
It happens only on the two distortion channels, so I can only assume it's happening during the pre-amp stage before high-gain is applied. Does this sound like I need a new pre-tube to you?
The tubes were all replaced (pre & power) around 4 months ago with really nice, high-quality tubes from dougstubes.com (doug's a damn sweet dude).
Any ideas? Troubleshooting stuff I could be doing?
