Hi All,

As a relative newb to "live" recording, I've taken the plunge recently and bought a Yamaha MD8 (it was cheap) and a set of cheap drum mics (the best I could afford), with the intention of saving some money with my band when it comes to recording a demo, as well as the possibility of setting up a small studio.

The set are "Eagle" mics, consisting of Bass/Kick, 4 Dynamics and 2 overhead condensors. Due to the limited funds, I was thinking of using the 4 dynamics to mic up our guitar & bass cabs as these seem to have very similar specs to dedicated amp mics like the SM57.

Has anyone used this method previously, and what were the results?

I had one of those all-in-one mic kits for drums... used 'em once a long time ago and now they sit in my mic cupboard. I wasn't too thrilled with any of the mics on guitar cab, but I was impatient and probably didn't spend as much time messing around with it as I should have. They do work good as a talkback mics though...

I think those kits are better for live sound, and not recording. As a general rule, you're MUCH better off with fewer mics that are of better quality.
