Ok, I played with the mentioned ideas a little, (clocest amp I have is a Fender Twin) and here are the results. Using a 2X12 8 ohm cab works best. Using a 2X12 16 ohm cab worked almost as well, maybe better in some respects. The volume level was hardly noticeable (at least to my ears) and the 16 ohm cab actually seemes to have a little better clean sound. My 8 ohm cab seemed a little brighter sounding (could be the speakers) but this was easily corrected in the 16 ohm cab by simply turning up the presence a little on the amp. Well, I did the experimentation for you, these were the results I got, you should get about the same. In my oppinion go ahead and wire the speakers in series and play on. This is also the fastest, simplest, and cheapest thing to do.
