American Idol mics

The microphones the American Idol contestants are using this year are Sennheisers that run a tad under $3,000 each:

And they have Neumann innards that run another $650.

And who knows how much extra that chrome finish is running them.

I guess it would be hard for ANYBODY to sound bad through those things.

P.S. It's hard to tell for sure, but it looks like the judges are using SM-57's? Under a hundred bucks for them, over $3,500 for the contestants?

The SM57's, if that's what they are, would be for back up or to add to the sound of the lapel radio mics that the Judges would have on them.

As for the Sennheiser part of the mic it's the top of the line wireless that makes it so expensive and the Neumann innards are of normal pricing.

As for the 57s, hey they're good enough for the president! 57s just have good of axis pick up and you don't have to be right on top of them -- very good if you have to do a television shoot.
