Steve's doesn't stock 'em, but they sell BeyerDynamic products - the M160 is a "special order". Hmmm - come to think of it, my sales guy was supposed to get back to me on the price and he hasn't yet! I'll let ya know when I find out - I expect it's in the $800cdn range.......

K great, because I want to get a ribbon mic because I ONLY play acoutic instruments........ I don't have any prob with electric stuff, that just how things turned out, so I want a nice sounding ribbon mic that doesn't hype the harshness of a brass instrument like the NT-1, and I was thinking that a nice ribbon would give me the dark/smooth sound I was looking for and the fact that the M160 gives a good sound with AMP's just an added bonus =)

Hey Rats... you got an M160? How do you like it???

Sabith... my guy at Steve's here can order it (so they should be able to get them in Toronto as well) and they're charging $895.00cdn........ it's around what I thought it might be......... if they can't help you in TO, call Steve's in Ottawa (at 613-789-1131) and talk to Fred Cesare.

i've got one because it is simply the best looking dynamic mic ever !

sm57

The Sm57 is very versitile. I use it for so many things and it's only 80 bucks. I use it for miking guitar cabs to horns and it picks up natural sounds as well and better than any mic in its price range. I would suggest having at least one.

i use an sm57 up close, and an audio technica 4033 a couple of feet back to mic my amp (fender hotrod deville).

i use the 4033 and a AT 3000c to record acoustic guitar. i heard those ribbon mics break easily. i'm way to accident prone for that.

I've heard a good combo is the 57 and an AKG D112....so as soon as I get me one a dem 57s, I'll try it out with my D112 and maybe through up my Rode NT2 (my only two "non-Radio Shack" mics) as well, even though the NT2 didn't rank up there too high on Bruce's mic shootout. :D And as soon as I get out of debt from the new soundcard I just bought, the 57's right up there on my list (along with new monitors, one of those C1 (or V67g) mics, and the list goes on and on and on and on..............) :D

(......and on and on..........)

Lots of companies have own their version of the SM57, but the 57 is the one that caught on. You rarely see 57s sell for 25-35 bucks (they are the one mic that there seems to be a strict blue book on, even used), and yet you can pick up some real sleepers made by other companies for very little money that do as good of a job as a 57, IMHO...

For example, I'd take an EV RE 15 over an SM57 any day, and I just picked up 4 for the price of a new 57. The RE15 can be used anywhere you'd use a 57, and in most cases (amps especially), it excells...

Other EV sleepers--common and sometimes cheap: RE 16 (similar to the RE15, but with a vocal screen)...also the RE18, a great all-around mic...

The AKGs that kinda look like a 57 can be had for next to nothing, and sound great. I believe the model #s are D1000, D2000, etc. The D19 is a great all-around mic, but because of the Beatle connection, is selling for absurd prices...

The old pre-57 Shures that look like 57s are great sounding mics, and, again, I prefer them over the 57. The 545 comes to mind, especially the ones with the built in handle/clip.

Anything made by Beyer is worth checking out. I picked up a M422 brand new for 50 bucks in a guitar store (it had been sitting there for years with a 109.00 pricetag), and it just kills on snare. The Soundstar series is also worth checking out, both the ones that look like an SM 58, and the 421 clone. Both great mics, and very versatile...

The point is this...you can sell your 57s/58s on ebay for 70 bucks a pop and double your mic collection very easily by keeping an eye out for the mics that slip under the RADAR. And in most cases, your sound will improve, too.....

I just found 7 of those EV RE 15 mics on ebay. They're at right about $100 as of now, and they end at just before 10 pacific time tonight (Monday 7/4). I don't have the cash, but I thought I'd pass the tip along to all of you.
