I am NOT a Gear Whore. ;)
yep so i've failed miserably many times before, but i have something that is not COMPLETLEY shit. well, i'll tell you, here's about 20 hours of work.

for the record, im not happy with it but i just could use some recommendations.

also, listen to the snare- sounds like its kinda phasing when hit? i dont know, maybe i'm going crazy??

http://myspace.com/vsproductionsinc

listen to my cover of 'the ocean' by zeppelin.

and no i dont do any recordings for people, but i will when i can get some decent results!

i couldnt charge people for that crap...

I think it's sounding pretty good man. Guitars could probably come up in volume just a bit. Other than that, it's cool.

How close was the snare mic? Did you mic the hat too? And how big of a room did you record drums in? Is it treated?

Kick needs some more click.

Oh, and guitars up.

That sounds pretty good. I was expecting ALOT worse after reading your post. The kik sounds fine. It doesn't beed more click for a Led Zeppelin tune, in my opinion. The snare is ringing quite a bit more than it should. You just mght need to spend more time tuning it and getting rid of some of the ring. Overall levles aren't bad. What was your micing set up for this?

thanks guys. what a confidence booster! (now i have to tame the ego... ;)
drums?? hehe.

roland TD-3 into DFH superior...

i almost forgot i did that, its been so long since ive finished the drums! wow, for a minute i though i made some productive drum sounds..

so i dont know how it was mic'ed...

the DFH sounds were all vintage ludwigs, 67 maple kit.

see i didnt tell anyone in the beginning and nobody could tell the difference! oh i love it! i really hate using 'fake' drums but i didnt want to play the drums for this song so i just downloaded a midi file and re-mapped it out.

bass is fake too. mapped it in reason.

but i did mix it myself! and i did the guitar parts. yeah, i should pick the guitar up a little in volume.

anyone want to record some vocals for this??

I would bring the guitars up on this definetly. The drums sound good to me, but im not a drummer.

Well, the drum "sounds" are decent. But, don't forget, you prepared me for something REALLY bad by the way you described what we were about to hear.

I did think it was a little robotic playing, there are no dynamics in the high hat, So that explains it, it's a programmed beat. I thought it was a guitar player playing drums, who did a half-decent job but didn't have any feel.
And the hats seem to be right in the centre, another thing I found strange, and that's why I asked how it was miced.

So having said that, don't get TOO high...hehe...They sounded decent, but I wasn't crazy about the snare at all. I'm actually surprised that it wasn't just a ringy snare in a bad room.
But all in all, it was a decent sound. Maybe find a more Bonham-like snare sound and get some feel in the high-hat, while moving it over to one side just a bit....And you'll be REALLY fooling people with that drum track.

thats the problem with the midi- i cant get the feel.. humanize doesnt really work all that well..

oh crap, i didnt pan the hihat!

no big deal, just an experiment which turned out OK. my friends think im amazing because of that rec... they didnt pick up on the drums or anything else for that matter!

It is a good recording. "Humanize" fuctions usually suck on drum machines. You should have some kind of access to the velocity of each hit. A good, simplified way to make it sund more human is to have the 1,2,3,4 playing louder than the "and" of each beat. I hope you know what I mean. Every second 8th note louder. Anyway, good job overall.

The drums in The Ocean are mixed too much up front. The guitars are centered when they should have more separation. Those would be my biggest critiques based on a quick listen.

Lullabye Symphonic is a much better mixed recording, in my opinion.

thanks for the info. the more i listen, the less i like zeppelin's 'recordings'. i like the songs, but they do some weird things, especially late zeppelin. the drums are just so raw and, like, uhh, i dont know, naturally reverbed? its like they just recorded in an ampitheater and sayed, 'the hell with acoustics, lets just go with this!'.

i like clean, crisp recordings that you know where recorded in multi-million dollar studios!

lullabye was done all with midi and sampletank. the ocean guitars where real so they werent as easy to mix.

honestly, i think midi stuff is my calling ;)

i love electronica/techno!

also, Lullabye was intended to rattle subwoofers. i put an eq boost at i thinik 40hz thinking it would shake my friends car to hell and back. well, it worked!

but i dont like how it sounds on my computer speakers. sounds good in his car, on my monitors, headphones etc, but not on computer speakers.

Well, original production aside, I'd still recommend mixing the drums in at a lower level and separating (as it is they're centered) the guitars a bit.
