holey shit.

good ears people, i've never heard that before.
but thare is a catch, although thare is auto tune on a small part of that song
(get ready)
THARE IS NONE ON THE SECOND VERSE OR SECOND CHOROUS (the part in question)

i NEVER run auto tune as an insert because it's such a piece of crap
so that is, somehow, natural. i'm serious. no, really.

but all the same i commend you because i've never notised that
and it clearly is a something.

you people suck, now i can't not hear it

but seriously, i didn't do it (this time)

just so you know, sample 2 was done by......

me
you may have been taken in a bit by the fact that mine is a little louder
(volume is not an issue here) but i (hell maby i'm wrong) still think his is better

i think mostly i'm a little frustrated becuase the singer is coming down with some serious diva syndrome.
her friends band just recorded at a real studio for a bunch of money and she's pissed this album dosn't sound exactly like that one.

the truth is that she's massively insecure about her work and i'm currently the easiest to blame.

please god just let it end.

I just re-listened to the two of them - on my computer speakers mind you - I must say that two sounds better here - hands down.

FWIW I agree with the public opinion (again listening on computer speakers though) that sample 2 sounds better. More clarity and top, however the top is a touch "grainy". May be due to MP3 conversion, lower quality A/D converters, dithering or processing. The ME may have been trying to avoid this in his version if that was present in the original recording and why there wasn't as much high end. The lower mids on the second one are also improved, but I think that both could use a bit of work there.

Could you post the original mix? Would be nice to hear what both of you were working from.

Mmn. Not too sure what one is actually better. Both pretty similar. Im sure there was more bass in no.2 but hard to judge as the bass guitar playing is not the most solid. THink you should maybe re track the bass and think about using different or more instruments to thicken up the mix. I know you are just recording it and might not actually be a producer, but i would advise on thinking about the instrumentation more to get a fuller sound.
If the person who makes this is kinda blaming you for it not sounding like a pro mix then tell them that they need to work on their instrumentation to get closer to a pro mix.
Try adding a cello or some light strings or a light synth as with layers of acoustic guitars strumming. and some backin vocals. Try some more harmonies on certain parts and double on some parts of the main vocal. Then add in extra backing vocals say like a 3 track harmony of ohhs and ahhs or just even a triple or double track of the same oohs and aahhhs.
Dont take offense, just thinking of some ideas to make the mix sound fuller and more pro.

I thought "Ruby Sample2", which was listed first, felt better for the track. You don't need more production for it to sound "pro", just a better vocal performance/editing.

That being said, I thought the guitar sounded much better/more full in "Sample2", and I could see where the ME was coming from. If you talk to him, I bet you can make it work.

Honestly I wouldn't worry about this - make what you can and run, if your worried about your reputation, don't take jobs like this. The only thing that can possibly help this recording is to remove the vocals from the mix. Unfortunatley the music isn't strong enough to stand on it's own.

She's getting diva complex? Who the heck is supporting this fantasy?

Anyhow sorry to be so harsh but I felt tortured to listen to this abomination.

i'll try and post the un-messed with version tommorow
(no limit or anything, so it'll be quiet) and yea, this is not the kinda thing that's good to decide over 128kbps mp3, i'll put it up on lightning cause i think
(correct me if i'm wrong) it'll take a 320kbps.

kats,
thankx, thare is no bass in that band, that's actually just me trying to make the most out of a guitar. he's playing the high and low lines at the same time kinda like charlie hunter, but with a regular git.
the other two guys in the band are very nice people, just she's getting irritateing.
the other day the drummer mentioned that she might want someone else to mix it and i said GOOD. but he wants me to do it, he's in a lot of bands and i record him a lot because he likes my drum sound.

here's the scoop if anyone's intrested (it's all true)
vox-mk-319 through an art tps on flat
git1-blue ball through digi001 pre
git2-mk319-art tps (both mic's on same amp, same time)
kik-b52-digi001
kick out-at4033-digimax lt
snr-rode nt3-digimax
toms(all)-e604-digimax
ovrs-mk 012-berringer something or other

i dare you to find worse pre-amps :D
thankx guies

Sounds great. The only thing I noticed was the bass is in your face throughout most the verses, screaming to be noticed. I'd like to hear it pushed back and tamed a little but that's all a bit of preference. It sat in well during the instrumental parts. I didn't notice an autotuner. The backround vocal mix sounded great. The other problem, well just tell her how good she looks every time you see her.
