Am I all set for now with my mics?

By the end of this week I will have the following mics:

SP C1
AT3035
MXL660
2 X Shure SM57's
SM58
AKG D112
2 X Behringer ECM8000
2 X AKG C418's.

Does it look like I have the basic stuff covered? Anything that I need that is glaring at you that I missed?

Also when it comes to pre-amps, all I have is a behringer mixer and an M-Audio DMP3. What would be a good step up? Are there any good 8 channel preamps out there currently available? Or should I look into getting a mackie 8 bus board and using those pre's?

great river, john hardy, fmr rnp, grace 101, speck micpre.

Those are a few.

Mics seem good, i'm not totaly familiar with all of those mics but are any of them a pair of sd cardiod condensors? The ecm 8000's are omni.

Might look into some marshal mxl603s, octavas, or SP c4's if you don't have any.

That is if you do a lot of stereo micing.

What is the greatest amount of tracks that you record at one time?

Chris

You're missing a pair of small-diaphragm cardiod condensers.

You need a pair of oktava mc012s or mxl 603s.

That's a prerequisite, and anything from there is merely filling in the blanks.

I have the ability to record 16 tracks at one time.

What are the small cardiod condensors used for (mc012's or the mxl603's)?

Are external pre-amps better than what comes in a good board?

I've heard the Mackie pres are pretty good and that you'd have to spend some bucks to get anything better.
I too am curious about the use of a small diaphragm mic. Couldn't I just use my large ones?

Humm, I'd add some MD421's, MXL603S's, Oktava MC-012's and a D112. Oh and another LDC mic that's not as bright as your C1.

What are the MD421's used for? Same thing for the MXL603's and MC-012's? I already have the D112.

If those are used for overheads then I already have the ECM8000 which work great for overheads.

You can use the Sennheiser MD421 for kick, toms, guitar and bass amps, horns, vocals and etc.... the MD421 is a large dynamic mic and it's a "MUST HAVE" type mic.

umair, what I meant was, what is the most tracks that you record at ONE
TIME, not what your maximum capability is.
I assume it's unlikely that you're recording with a roomful of musicians
using all 16 tracks at once.
For example, if the current amount of tracks used at one time is four,
all you may need are two more mic pre's (or one dual unit).

If you're not using both SM57's at once, I'd ditch the SM58 and replace
it with a Electro-Voice EV 635a omni dynamic. It works well on many
instruments (including guitar cabs) and many close miked vocals.
Also second getting the 421, and if it's in the budget, the Beyer M88
or M88TG.

Well. I record drums and I usually setup about 8 mics for the drums. And then I can mic everything else up as reference tracks for the remainder, so I guess I do record about 14 at one time but some of them go right to the board. I have the ability to record 16 tracks at one time but I will only keep about 8 and re-record all of the reference tracks... with the exception of bass, that usually goes direct in using a DI box and the bass player uses his own Preamp. But I see what you are saying, I won't keep anymore than 8 tracks at one time. I use the behringer mixer as my pre-amps for those tracks. I'd like to buy a strip to replace it or a mackie mixer for better pre-amps but I'm starting to diminish my funds.
I have two Nuendo/RME ADI-8 Pros going into a hamerfall which is pretty cool.
I typically use the AT3035 on guitar cabs along with a shure sm57. I like to keep the sm58 just for live stuff too. IS there anything on there that you think I should sell to make room for better mics?

If you can spare one of the SM57's for singing live, all you might need is
the $10 (or so) Shure foam pop filter that attaches on it.
(It'll sound clearer than a SM58)
Then you could take the $$ from selling the SM58 towards other stuff.
If you have access to a good sounding room for your drums, typically
that's a bigger factor than the Behringer pre's, as you may know.

Chris

umair, get a Soundcraft instead of a Mackie... and to follow up on what Chris said... the SM57 foam pop filter is called the A2WS windscreen and works well live.

A soundcraft spirit? Or the more expensive ones? I saw spirits going for far less than the mackies. I must be thinking of the wrong ones. Or did you mean a ghost which is mucho deneiro? I was looking at the mackie 32X8 or 24X8. And then the soundcraft and allen & heath boards. I just search for them on ebay daily and try to get the best deal out of those choices. I could have sword I saw the spirits going for under a grand.

Get the Ghost... it's way better than the Mackie 32x8 bus. Keep an eye on ebay for one.
