Ok. Finally. I have something that I can post up here for you people to hear. We worked on this shit for a little while, but it has no vocals cause we never got around to layerin em in.

Lemme tell you some about how this was recorded: Guitar and drums tracked simultaneously, bass is a Roland MC505(which is hella cool by the way). Guitar doesnt sound quite how I'd like it, I know, its not the greatest, but fuck...

We had 1 SM57 (kick) one BG4.1 (snare i think) a bunch of randomly assorted Radio Shack mics that we used to mic just about ever drum and the guitar...

Recorded onto HD through Event Gina and Behringer 1602A mixer.

Some of the effects you hear were added later using Sound Forge.

I know its not the greatest shit, but we had fun recording it, and had fun playing it, and as far as I'm concerned thats the primary objective.

Thanks for listening...dont be too harsh.

Fuck. Damn idrive. It works for me, I just tried it twice. I'll try and get it up somewhere else...

i got the song to work, and it sounds cool. it needs those vocals though, and the radio shack mics have to go. you can hear them on the cymbals, and it's just nasty. the drums could definately be improved. turning them up would help, more highs eq'ed onto the snare, compression and slight reverb on the kick, and the toms should stand out a little more. you might want to try tuning the snare up higher too, for a snappy sound. you want a more punchy snare sound for this i think. i really like the guitar (especially your heavy sound, what did you use to get it?), but a rythym track on the verses (i think they are verses, the clean chorused parts) might make it sound more complete. but overall, it's pretty cool, the only thing i wasn't all that impressed with was the drums.

Well, it's not bad. It has an early Metallica sound to it...that "drums in a metal tank" sound. Since you recorded it for fun I'll start by saying that it's pretty cool. Nice guitar playing and use of creative effects.

I'm going to pick on it a bit though if you don't mind (hey, this is the clinic :)

- First of all, what are you monitoring with? The guitar is motherfucka loud. It's drowning EVERYTHING out. I have the same problem because my monitors are large and bass heavy so I usually have to keep my guitars quieter than where I'd like to hear them while mixing. You should try listening to this mix with walkman-style headphones once...holy crap.

- Either your drummer is drstawl, or he needs to learn how to take charge and be the drummer. He's either dragging or following your guitar throughout the whole tune. Now it may be intentional and it's just confusing my ears (hence the drstawl comment)... but it sounds like he's playing odd time when the tune is straight 4. You didn't happen to record the guitars first and THEN the drums did you? That would explain it.

The drum sound could also be improved, but you did say you were using Radio Shack mics. Man I know where you're coming from there....hell I'd screw Ed for a nice mic or two. Heh. The effects on the drums are cool though.

- I can't hear the bass guitar very well. The first two times I listened I actually thought you mighta mixed down without it. I hear it now, but it's powerless. It needs to come up.

- The heavy guitar is really pretty good, even though it's too loud. I like the way you doubled it (sounds doubled anyway). I like the chord that's between 0:41 and 0:42.

So, you might consider dropping the volume on the guitars considerably. If they don't sound "big" enough at lower volumes, then you have a problem. You could try running the track through a tube preamp to give it some size...or add more effect (though there's already a lot of shit on it)...or double it all the way...or rerecord it. Wow, what help!

I think that after turning the guitars down we'll hear a lot more from the mix. The bass will be more audible. Though I have a feeling it's going to need some EQ. Try boosting the bass in the ~80hz range and cutting your guitars in the 100-400hz range (you have to find the sweet spot). Remember that you're going for a mix here...so don't worry if your guitar sounds exactly the way it does to your ears...what counts is that the guitars, bass, and drums all play nice with eachother to create a single big sound.

As for the drums...hmm. Those mics suck dude. Did you try micing the drums with only your "good" mics.....I guess that's only 2 mics...so you'd have to move them back a ways...you'd lose tightness but they might have more life. I've never mic'd drums before.

Anyway, these are big words coming from someone who sucks at recording...so take everything I've said with a grain of salt.

I'm glad to finally hear something from you. I seem to remember hearing a clip you did a while back in the chatroom....I dunno.

Haha, no, we didnt record the guitar first, then the drums, and I do know that its not always on time.

Believe me, the mics suck shit, the monitors suck shit (just some Cambridge Soundworks stereo speakers), everything we have sucks shit. Except the guitar amp, which as a Randall 4x12 half that we borrowed from some dude. The distorted guitar was just the dirty channel on the Randall. It's double tracked. The Randall is cool.

Micing drums is a bitch. Especially the drums we had. Especially with the mics we had. I understand exactly what you are talking about drum sound wise. I dont like their sound either. The bass drum is basically non existent, which is what pisses me off the most.
The ONLY thing I like about the drums is the flange effect we put on em at like 1:07.

The bass guitar was the Roland 505. I think it sounds damn sweet in a car with subs...you can really hear the bass drops well. But ya, out of normal stereo speakers, its not the greatest.

And yes...it really does need vocals. We made each part
long enough to allow vocals to fit, but we just kinda ran outta time...or something...somehow we just ended up with this.

Lots of room for improvement, I know. But it was fun makin it.

Oh ya. As for compression on the kick. Ya tell me about it...if only we had a compressor...

I'd like to know how the hell you two got in and downloaded the song...I've copied, pasted, hand typed, and wanked over this thing about 9 times...nothing works.....and I wanna hear it dammit....dammit....gibs

Yo, Gibs... make sure you wait for the iDrive page to completely load before you enter anything into the text boxes. I haven't fully DL'ed it yet... be back.

Nice tune. I like the change-up from the arpeggio to the full metal scronk. But as Slack noted, the timing needs to be improved. Both the drums and the guitar seem to be at fault in drifting around, but the drums more often. When I play with a drummer I like to have them rock solid like an atomic clock so I can look to them for a reference point now and again. Maybe if you all had a mix in headphones with a phantom metronome....
gibs: maybe someone else is logged in while you happen to request the page? that's why I use the visitor deal when I post my stuff to i-drive. Even though I no longer do... :)

Thanks dr. Ya, you are right, the timing sucks. I know it. The drummer wanted to have the beat cut back in and out, it made it a little more difficult.

Hey, how can I make an mp3 downloadable from a website? I have a site, I uploaded this mp3 to it, but I can't make it so it can be downloaded. Anyone know?

Ya need to create a page that has the link to the file. Make sure the address is correct and obeys any naming convention restrictions enforced by your ISP. Mine disallows space characters in a filename.
As to cutting the beat in and out- headphones with a metronome tone help to keep the inaudible boundaries audible.

still tryin' still gettin' nowhere....why me....dammit...dammit...gibs

I have the mp3 upped at
but it doesnt seem to work either...son of a bitch.
