Alright computer gurus...

You guys, I'm terribly sorry (I am!) but I really, really need to know. Just link me up with the best laptops within that price range. I'm not computer literate when it comes to specs and stuff.. :S

Go head over to http://www.notebookreview.com/ and read all the reviews and message board posts you feel like. The site was very helpful for me recently when I was shopping around for a new notebook. I went with a Dell D820 pretty much fully loaded that came in right around $2500 and I like it a great deal. I'm a software engineer for a living and the dual core is very zippy. I've done some audio editing on it and it's very fast. The new macs with dual cores are very nice as well and would probably suit a graphics student nicely. HP has some nice business line laptops as well that I was looking at but were a little behind in specs when I got my D820. If I had to buy it myself (the company I work for bought mine) I'd probably go with an HP right now. I like the feel of the Dell and HP keyboards. As suggested above you might want to try and keep the laptop around 1500-2000 since you're likely going to be getting a new one in 2-3 years.

A couple hints:
Don't get the highest CPU speed, get a step or two down, the money is wisely spend on additional RAM.
Get the warranty for how long you think you'll have the laptop. On a laptop, you will use it maybe even more than once.

Okay, I'll bite.

You want a 'thin and lite' notebook. Don't be seduced by sexy multimedia shit... keep that crap on your desktop system. Extra batteries and extra power chargers... you lose that shit and you have no computer. Insurance, insurance, insurance... against theft, breakage, whatever. You need it for as long as you intend to keep the computer... which, trust me, is longer than you think right now. You turn your back for a second and the bitch has grown legs and wandered away. I've seen it a hundred times if I've seen it once. You want a wireless router in your dorm, and network attached storage (NAS) to back your notes and shit up to.

DO NOT go fucking nuts over the hottest processor or tons of memory or fast video. Stay real, this thing is for working on CLASSWORK and is a TOOL. STAY FOCUSED.

Luck. Lots and lots of luck.

the MacBook Pro is very nice. you can get a educational discount from Apple on the Core Duo 2.0 model and it will cost you $1799. get the Apple Care (international 3 year coverage) and a Windows XP license from your college (again, educational pricing). max out the RAM from someplace other than Apple. you should be set for under $2500.

Thanks a lot, I think I'm going to go this way too.

I think, though, that I'm going to wait for the MacBook Pros to start coming out with the Intel Core 2 Duo Meriom, which was out in July I think, and will DEFINITELY hit the MacBook Pro (and non-pro, I would believe) beginning-mid September.
