It's time for me to get a new mixer. 16 channels, sub-$1000.

Of these 3 budget mixer types in my price range, I've only heard and used the ubiquitous Mackie 1402 VLZ Pro.

I'm looking for 16 channels. I know the Spirit only has 12 mic pres, but the MixWizard has 16 and the 1604 VLZ Pro has 16. This isn't a make-or-break feature for me, because I have some outboard pres. I guess I'm just wondering who has actually heard and used these, and how the pres are. Other features and usability stuff are interesting to me too. I probably won't use the eq much, but you never know, it could surprise me. Also, I don't think the efx are a huge plus (on the Mixwizard) but could be useful if I run into a singer who needs to hear some reverb on his voice while he's recording or something...

Thanks for your help, folks, I tried as hard as I could to narrow down the product field, but I know some of you have used these mixers, and I just haven't.

I really like my Spirit. Heard aot of nice things about them as well.

I use a A&H mixwizard 16, and I just flat out love it. The thing I really love about it is that it has individual balanced outs for every channel. I just run the out of each of the first eight into my delta 10/10, and then the outs of the delta into 9-16. the sound is great, although it is a little crowded knob wise.

Thanks ap! I wonder why that didn't turn up on my searches?

Allen & Heath Mix wizard

I have a Allen & Heath 16 mix wizzard unit in my studio.
It has a clean warm sound, two sweepable mids, 5 aux
sends, and onboard effects. I like it, but would go another
way if I had the choice to make over again. First of all It
wasn't built for recording. Why? It dosn't have tape returns.
It also has a +30 Db cut pad that slightly chokes the signal.
If you don't use the pad, your signal is way to hot and
distorts. So you have to use the pad cut. I did a test to
prove it - I sent my acoustic guitar tracks through my
little mackie 1202vlz just to hear the difference. There
was a punch increase.

To conclusion, the Allen board would probably function
well in a live setting, it's intended purpose. - I'm looking
to get away soon.

Chuck:)

That has been a pain in the ass from time to time in my home studio but a GREAT idea in a live setting!

Whoa, a helpful, meaningful post. Thanks Chuck. In all the posts I've seen regarding this topic, that's the first time I've seen that problem mentioned. It may be the first really concrete statement as opposed to "x is warmer etc." I think Sjoko or someone may have alluded to it. Kinda reminds you how easy it can be to take this BBS too seriously and make a decision you could later regret.
