Okay, this weeked I'll spend a few dollars on equipment.

I have 900$ CAN (Which is about 570$ US).

I have a StudioProjects C1 but still no preamp for it. I was wondering if I would be better to buy a all in one unit (Focusrite Penta) or two units (A preamp and maybe a good reverb box).

I own CoolEdit Pro 1.2a (Which has the effects I need (I think)) and Acid Pro 3.0

I'm recording Rap Vocals only.

What do you guys think would be the best?

Also if you think I would be better to buy a 500$ US preamp and use the effects in CoolEdit, tell me too!!!

Thanks,
Beathoven

(P.S.: If you think I should buy 2 different units, tell me which ones! Thanks!)

i can only speak for myself....the only outboard gear i have need for is a compressor...with digital being so touchy, its nice to have some security as long as you dont overdo it.....alot of people advise recording dry and adding effects later so im happy with my preamp,compressor,plugins.....

one preamp i would look at

also, a Grace 101 and a RNC should go in your budget

Does a RNC acts has a Preamp too???
Or is it a compressor only?

Peace,

compressor only.....and a very good one at that.....recording rap vocals, you will want a good mic, preamp, and compressor.....the RNC claims to sound as good as any compressor under $1000 and youd be hard pressed to find anyone here who will disagree.....

Okay...

Let's say I buy the RNC (Which is $180.00 on 8thstreet.com), I would have $320.00 left.

Which preamp would you recommend me for that price?

Thanks Gidge!

oh damn im seeing $900 CANADIAN now...im assuming you are in Canada?...wouldnt you have to pay extra duties and taxes if you buy in the US?

I'm a little curious myself as I'm looking into the same thing.

Your basic choices would be the Penta or Meek or an Audio Buddy/RNC combo.

I'm leaning towards a Grace and RNC but that is a little more than your budget.

You mention Reverb but you wont get that in any true preamp situation. Cool Edit will probably be enough for effects on Rap vocals unless you want a lot of lush female BG vocals then you might need some serious reverb boxes or plugins.

the Grace 101 goes for around $559 US

of course the DMP3 is a really nice unit too for $199 US...VERY nice....but the Grace is a step above...pro level.....

the question of duties/taxes applying still stands?

also, how good of quality are you looking for (hobby quality, project studio quality, demo quality, pro quality?)

Well I'm looking for pro quality at a low price :)

I will look into the Grace. 599$ US for pro quality seems OK for me.

I will buy the RNC after.

I won't order it from the US. I know the boss of a musician store near my location. He seems to have pretty good deals. (I was looking into the penta and the price he suggested was about what I would pay to order it from the US)

Thanks Gidge,
Beathoven
