nah. im not dissin nas.

here's the thing: i was at this club for indie hip hop. they only had 1 mic. there were groups of 2, 3, 4, and even as many as 20 . . . wtf!!!

is it worth gittin on stage when u gotta share mics? what do yall think?

i ask becuase ive done this shit in tne past and was never happy, satisfied, comfortable with how it turned out. so, i stopped doin it. tonight i went ahead and went against waht has been a long standing rule and sure enough - SHEER DISSAPOINTMENT. for me, sharing mics is some bullshit.

is this just me being too picky ? aferall, who the fuck am i? or is this something other people (u guys) would be leary of as well?

(and it certainly didnt help that the mic was so cheezy - u couldnt hear anyone's actual vocals as they performed - unless instead of using an instrumental cd - they used the cd wit the vocals on the track - n they just "lipsynched: . . .

feedback please!

IMO if I were an MC one the advantages of sharing mics if battle rapping iz right after I spit my rhyme I'll SLAM that shit right in my opponents chest lol...was it a battle

lol - nah it was not a battle - just "performances" each group did like 4 songs - and each group had to share the mic -

each time, i was lookin n observin, n dudes would just "stand there" waitin 4 there turn . . . there were a couple who actually got animated, but u couldnt hear if they were cosignin, addlibbin, or what . . u just saw em bouncin a bit!

1 emcee and 3 mimes. nice. i've also wanted to go to the circus.

Yup same shyt down here when we perform. We always call the club we going to before hitting the place up to see how many mics they have. If they only have like one or two mics, we bring our own.

I really dont know why clubs are like that. Mics are so cheap, and all the money they make per head should compensate that.

When I did shows, I brought my own mics anyway. Most clubs tend to use cheap ass mics just like they cheapen their drinks by watering them down lol (yet they wanna charge the fuck outta you for them).

Just my $2 since the stock market was good.

ok cool - what kind of mic (presumably chordless) - ? - do i look for so i can just hit the stage, pull it out my pocket n do my thing ?

(cuz it is incredibly difficult to have 2 em cees and a hkype man on stage wit 1 mic. the hype man aint really "comin across" at all - let alone the em cee who does the background vocals during the verse - and damm - just think had i brought the singer to the show as well!!!!

I always used corded (same ones I used in the studio back in the day)...with a long ass cord. Usually the stages were smaller since they were clubs. But if you go cordless, I'm sure you're gonna get a lot of opinions here.

cool i just got off the phone wit a music store - they say SHURE SM58 is the industry standard . . . so . . .

All I need is one mic.

Why? Because I don't have a hype man... It's just me. :D

Ok So Even Wit The 1 Mic Situation - Cuz I Can Def. Feel U On Still Rockin It, Esp. When Ur A 1 Man Show - I Used To Be A 1 Man Show, So I Know !

But Then Still, When The Mic Is Shit -

I Mean, The Club Dj Was Callin Acts Up To The Stage And No 1 Knew What He Was Sayin Till He Stopped Teh Music And Shouted Their Name (w/o) The Mic

That's generally not the fault of a crappy mic. It's rather the fault of a horrible sound engineer. I generally ask the sound person (I highly doubt they're an actual engineer) to EQ the mic with a 300hz rolloff to kill the low end, and a small boost in the 1k to 2k range to brighten it up a bit.

well im certianly going to try those settings!!! hmm perhaps i should get me a small "amp/monitor" to use for practice sessions wit the group im coaching! - ? then i might be able to get them to learn more on mic use - i have seen some serious mic-cuffing goin on . . .
the mic-cuffin is deep, i gotta speak on this shit
the hand swallows up the mic - like a freak on the dic
lol

Mic cuffing isn't a problem when referring to common stage mics. Stage mics (most) are dynamic mics. Not unidirectional condensors. So if an emcee is cuffing the dome of the mic, as long as the very top isn't covered and they spit directly into the top, it shouldn't be a problem.

I cuff the mic myself, usually. It's more comfortable performance wise... But I always hold the mic directly in front of my mouth and make sure the top isn't blocked. Like this:

You hit the nail right on the bullseye. U can be using the best mic on stage but if the sound engineer doesnt know how to use the eq, then the overrall sound will be shyt. I went to this strip club (ghetto as hell) a few weeks ago to peform. When we were performing, we couldnt hear nor the crowd hear what we were saying. It sounded like the instrumental music was too loud and clipping on the mixer. The speakers they were using sounded like they were busted.

I noticed the next group that came up next, were lip syching over their music. It sounded alot better, since u dont have to depend on the mics/engineers hardware quality. I decided to start doing that also. although i dont agree with doin that. :D

Man dont worry. I use to be afraid and nervous also. I was like how am I gonna handle lots of eyes lookin at me. Man once u get on stage, and spit ya first bars, it will feel like u practicin in front of your friends. ;)
