Firstly thanks Joseph for allowing me to work on you material. Once again being free from my own lyrics and stronger ideas about my music has been incredibly liberating.
The Vs progression and melody I have had around for years and the lyric without too much re-scanning fell very nicely. My recent rediscovery of Maj9 during Mississippi led to the Pre-chorus and the Chorus just had to do that Doorsy thing and the Santanaesque guitar just seemed to follow.
There is definitely a change in direction to the song with my rearrangement of your lyrics so I have contributed a bridge of my own; it just came very organically after finding the chords.
You can hear it at here. I've called this version 'The Cutter's Song' on SoundClick , as it has seemed away from 'All I loved in You'.
Below are your lyrics, as I have worked them. I hope you like this version - great lyrics to work with, thank you.
Cheers
Burt
The Cutter's Song
Verse 1
The words you wrote are sealed inside
Alone I’ll wait and bide my time
Forever is this lonely night
Where I live to make you mine
Verse 2
Pretend I know the counting clocks
Well, maybe once upon a time
I'd like to know, I'd love to learn
What it takes to make you smile
Pre Ch
I trust I know through faith alone
What your heart will finally say, till then . . .
Chorus
I'll guard our flame of love
I'll take it to my grave
I'll guard our flame of love
Till the cutter chips away
The die of life is cast in stone
I feel it everyday
Till the cutter chips away
Cutter chips away
Verse 3
I'll count the stars you see at night
Alone I'll pray and bide my time
Forever is this lonely night
Where I live to see your eyes
Pre-Chorus
Chorus
Bridge
They say that every heart of stone
Is weathered by the rain
Then my tears should be a stonecutter’s hand
To cut some love out of this pain
Chorus
