How decent are these boards?

I was looking at a Studiomaster Mixdown 16:8 (which is available again, and I am going to check out) and I know Track Rat had one and liked it, but I have heard these boards can be noisy.

How quiet are the Alesis 24s??

I am looking for something that will eventually be an ADAT setup.

For a 40 dollar difference ($170 for the Studio24 and $210 for the Mixdown 16:8) wich would be a better option......pre's/EQ/routing/durability/reliability/etc.?????

thanks for any input.

 Both Alesis 24's, and 32's are a budjet item. They do a decent job, they are not a heavy duty item, have had power supply problems........
The studiomaster is a better built item, for the money I would choose that or the Allen-Heath Mix Wizard or thier other small frame format. With the quality of Allen-Heath you will have that mixer for a long time/minamal problems too..........

So far I've never had any problems with the Studio 24. Did a good job for my needs. You do need a couple of decent pre's for better sound. The Allen and Heath is much better but if you a running an ADAT machine you need to monitor whats comming out of the ADAT (in line monitoring) So I think most of the A&H boards you'll need 16 channels for 8 tracks of ADAT. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong on this.

I own the Studio 24 and have absolutely nothing to compare it to. So I can't say it sucks or it doesn't soundwise. My impression is that it probably isn't that great.

But, it does have a lot of different routing capabilities. A lot more than I have need for anyway. Also, I've never really had an problems with it, but I've heard a lot of horror stories from other people.

I think for cheap, it's a decent board. But if you want pro quality, you should look elsewhere.

 Correctamundo Zbert. I wish Allen-Heath did build a board with inline monitoring..........
