i have an alesis studio 24 that I want to use to do some recording and some live performances. Am I going to need a seperate speaker amplifier in order to power my PA speakers and monitor speakers... or will the studio 24 have enough juice for one or the other etc..

sorry it is such a basic question. i must not understand the term preamp :)

You will need a seperate amplifier. That mixing console is not powered. I think you're getting a bit confused with the preamp idea. Preamps only boost microphone levels. They have nothing to do with powering speakers.

Thanks very much.. that cleared alot of confusion. So, whats a good (as always very cheap) amp?

Depends on what you want to power. How many speakers, wedges??

What's your budget??
So you want to power to of those yamaha speakers and use them for pa speakers and sometimes foldbacks??

How many watts is your JVC speakers?

If you can find some yorkville monitors they are great for the money. I have A pair of Y115's. I did a quick search and found some here http://www.musiciansbuy.com/yorkville_spkrcab_yseries.htm#Y112
They kick the hell out of the yahmahas and such in that price range. Just a little over $200 a pop.

Look around for used stuff. Particulaly the amp. Get new speakers if you can. People tend to abuse them. :D

it doesn't have 1/4" outputs or inputs of noticed.. that's kind of bad for me.

what about the alesis RA300? how does that compare to the yamaha?
