I want to buy the Alesis drum machine to make my own drums. Does anyone have an opinion on this product?

It's pretty easy to use, and manipulate, but it literally hasn't been changed in a few decades. As such, 90% of the drum sounds are sopping wet with reverb (which you can't remove), and would only be appropriate for a cover of KISS's "Tears are Falling" or Hearts "(How do I get you) Alone."

It's the only drum machine I own, but I would guess there is probably something comparably priced out there with a more versitile or modern sound.

which machine would you recommend to get a very good sound and a variety of beats?

Like I said, the SR16 is the only one I've ever used, so I'm not much good. Just did a quick search at zzounds. What about the Boss DR3? I think I've heard some OK things about that machine. Just a thought.

Edit - try doing a search in the drummer forum here. A lot o fdrum machine stuff ends up there.

useful for practice, unacceptable for recropding in my opinion.
i prefer a software drummachine (Fruity loops has been my fav) and there are a bunch of free or not too expensive sets of samples you can use to get a decent if not great sounding recording if you spend the tiem programming.

Check out the Boss 880 drum box. It does good stuff. Bass lines included but you can shut them off or change key.

The patches are amazing compared to the older SR16. [I had one.]

Best price I found before I bought my 880 was at Full Compass.

Green Hornet

I bought one around 7 years ago. I dont think it was to great then,
and it hasnt been improved at all. Its sitting in my closet right now.
Theres only maybe 100 sounds on it. its easy to use though
Try to find a used mpc, or dr.boss

I think almost $500 for that Boss machine is nuts. Why pay for a bass machine if you don't need it. I love my SR16. I purchased an Editor Program for it about 3 years ago. I control and program it with my laptop. A few mouse clicks and I have a custom drum set. It could not be easier. I assign the 4 outputs to what ever I want to. I run the selected outputs through a Compressor and it sounds great, very REAL sounding.

today I bought FL studio 6 from www.fruityloops.com/English/frames.html - for $99. Soon I received a message that I should know that I bought a "Downloadable" version of FL and I shouldn't expect to get "a cd or a box". I'll get an E-mail to download. How would it be different from the real FL studio 6?

How about real drums

I went the SR16 route didn't like it, found it took way to much time to program the drum beats for a rhythm that sounds real. Also tryed the drum loops didn't like that either. I ended up buying a cheap set of drums for around $500.00.
The only problem is they take up alot of space. But it so nice just to me able to record with real drums compared to wasting all that time with programing.
I guess you could use midi drums but I can't stand midi either.

It looks as though for $99 you got the download version. The boxed version, with CD and manual, sells for $139.
