Hey,
In my High School ROP electronics class we have what we like to call a studio. (Berhinger mixer, other almost pro stuff). Anyway, we are using an Alesis RA-100 to power our monitors and aside from our horrible standing wave problem, we have a bad buzz in the monitors. I have norrowed the problem down, theoretically, to the Alesis bacuse it is the only thing plugged into the mixer right now. We are waiting for some patchbays (stupid school beuracracy) so we just have the power amp plugged into the control room outputs of the mixer. How do I eliminate the buzz without lifting the ground of the amp or using a cheesy little hum eliminator (which is what the kids who graduated before me did, ughhhh)? Or is the hum eliminator OK? I think it is an Ebtech(??)

Thanks,
Ian

Thanks for those great links! I'll print 'em out and get some credit for my class. Anyone else experience the same problem with the Alesis amp?

It IS a very common problem with those amps, which is why I made the comment about it!

Make sure that the power amp and the mixer (and all of the equipment for the matter) are plugged into the same outlet (via a power strip). That'll go a long way in reducing ground loops.

Ok, so if I read those links right, here's what I need to do. I need to open up the amp and connect the signal ground to the chassis ground. Is this safe? Am I missing something? Two days ago we plugged everything into the same power strip and the hum didn't change at all. That's what makes me suspect the alesis (as well as the fact that it is notorius for having this problem).

Thanks in advance,
Ian

The better way would be to invest in a balanced power transformer and power the studio thru it.... Furman has them....

The money saved in buying cheap gear is lost in having to buy workarounds for the cheap circuit design!

We are using three Furman Power conditioners, is this the same thing?
