Would appreciate anyone offering opinions of these monitors for use by a hobbyist home recorder...even if you don't know the model, is 'Alesis' a good brand?

They're not particularly well-loved. I have the Actives and they're fine....chose them over the Wharfedales everyone is raving about...but they're definitely flawed in the low end.

They aren't all that expensive so I suppose you get what you pay for. What is the actual name for the 'actives'?

Monkey, I bought and tried the actives in my (very small) home studio, and they didn't cut it for me. Different strokes. I returned them and bought some M-audio BX5s, which work very well when combined with a small sub.
There's a new version of the Alesis (active and passive models) just released, though, which runs about the same price as the older model. The new active model has some helpful EQ switches to adapt it to a room. Do a quick search if you're interested.

I have the Monitor One mkIIs. Not bad for the price, But I definately want another set of monitors to reference off of.

Hey an Aussie. Are you looking at the actives or the passives? I recently bought a pair of passives for $380 from www.turramurramusic.com.au. I find that they're decent enough for my purposes and great value for such a price. There are certainly better monitors out there, of course. If you get the passives you need to have an amp to go with it, though.

I got my Presonus Firebox through turramurra music. They seem to be a good mob. I am just beginning to wade into the waters of studio monitors. I hardly know anything about them. I don't even know what the difference is between active and passive.
I saw the "Behringer Truth B2030P" studio monitors at turramurra for a dirt cheap price...so I suppose they would sound like dirt. I dunno. I read some reviews about them and the opinions ranged from "awesome" through to "why do these monitors pick up radio stations?"
I think my best bet is to use the search button like that fella said. It took me ages to sus out the Firebox...and even still, problems have sprung up. But they are no fault of the Firebox...they are problems with stupid SP2 and firewire. So, I'll keep investigating. Thanks
