Alesis module, triggers and soundfonts...

Hello I'm new to this board !

Well, I'm gonna record my drumkit, but buying mics is too expensive and you don't get a great sound always.

So I was thinking about getting an Alesis DM5 or D4 drum module, and some triggers (ddrum).
I just bought a very PRO drum soundfont.
The cymbals are going to be the real ones. (i'll use mics)

I'm gonna run the module into the midi input and the cymbals into my mackie 1202 mixer and then into the soundcard.
I'll record a midi track and an audio track with the cymbals.
im gonna apply some GATE to the cymbals to erase all unwanted sound.

What advices or tips can you give me? Will I be able to get a proffesional quality using this setup ?

I'm new into this recording method so any help would be VERY appreciated !!!

Now, I don't know much about midi, but I'll tell you how I do it. I use two Rode NT3's for overheads. Great sounding mics for the $149 that I paid for each. I only trigger the snare and kick drum. I use Ddrum triggers which go to an old D4 module. I use the module's settings to pan the snare and the kick to different analog outs so I can record them on separate channels of my Korg d16. The overheads generally catch enough of the toms, unless you want the "toms in yo' face" effect. Only uses four tracks and I usually get good results. I would not personally gate the cymbals, since a little of the actual snare and kick blended in with the triggered sounds good sometimes.

Works for me.
 
In two of the studios I work in we record midi drum parts and live cymbals. Choice of mics and stereo vs mono are a personal decision,(there are numerous disccusions on the site), but I think the gate is a good idea because - the overheads will pick up the attack of the sticks on the drum trigger pads. Normally, the sound is covered when the midi drum sound come up in the mix - but we've found it perferrable to gate out the "click of the sticks.

I'm gonna use the Red shot Ddrum triggers, they aren't pads so if i dont apply gate, the midi will mix up with the "natural" drumkit.

What drum SOUNDFONT can you recommend me ? My band plays prog-heavy metal.
I bought a great soundfont from http://www.sonicimplants.com, but if you can tell me a good site it would be great.
