Hi,
I’m currently using a Dell Inspiron 6400 (with Windows XP and 1GB ram) in conjunction with an Alesis iO26 Firewire audio interface. I have been able to record audio with limited success i.e. cubase would record then suddenly stop recording etc. Midi would drop out or would sometimes be accompanied with buzzing noises (occasionally without)… Other times when I would load cubase it would tell me “The ASIO driver Alesis Firewire could not be started”... (All this I've read in forums countless times... I know I'm not the only one!)
I uninstalled this version (SX3) and installed the cubase lite version that came with the Alesis. This time it won’t let me record at all, always getting the “The ASIO driver Alesis Firewire could not be started” message.
I decided to get an express card with the Texas Instruments chipset to see if that would solve the problem. However, this time round I don’t even get any system sounds. This is despite the fact that the iO26 is recognized in “Sounds and Audio Devices”.
I have disabled everything that I don’t need in the BIOS settings (namely modem and WIFI) and disabled them in Device Manager. I have also installed the latest Alesis driver updates onto my laptop, but all to no avail.
I’m not sure what to do next. I’ve heard that this Dell model (or any Dell for that matter) is not very suited to music production but didn’t expect to have more problems after upgrading the firewire chipset.
The only other thing I can think of is that I have some problem with my system files (sorry to be vague - I'm a bit ignorant but trying to learn
)what with having had more than one version of Cubase installed on the laptop, although I don’t see that this accounts for the lack of system sounds when using the TI chipset.
Hope somebody is able to help.
Many thanks for reading this.
