Alesis DM5 Electronic Drum Kit:

I've got the DM5, but not the kit. I've been using a drumKAT and a PinTech ErgoKik with mine. I just did some kick replacement on a recording with the DM5, too.

That's cool, I ordered the set I linked. Figure if it sucks I can just send it back, but the damn thing is on back-order so now I'm stuck with my drum sticks, two books and a frying pan for the next week or so :(

Yeah I saw that when I was debating which route to take. I had planned for a good while to actually build my own triggers and all of that, but by the time I added the module and cables, and then the supplies and added stands or mounting hardware, hell I saved myself several hours work, frustration and testing atleast.

aye... it was a labour of love let me tell ya :D

I won't be doing it again ;)

But it plays OK-ish for an e-kit and that was a relief

That's all you can ask for. As long as it works, beat 'em until they don't then fix 'em again!

I made my own triggers for my DM5 but it would've been cheaper to go for the Alesis' own set...

I've posted this on the Alesis forum but you may not have seen it:-

BTW... Drums are not my instrument at all... I just fancied making my own kit...

To be honest, the pads you built are probably a whole lot better than what comes with the Alesis kit.

I'm very...ummm......anti-Alesis. :D
The pads you built look to be fairly heavy duty to me.

your pads and frame look like they'll last forever. how much money did you end up puttting into your kit?

I lost count... or am I just too embarrased to say

I would say around £400~500. The pads came to around £8 each and if you've seen my photo journal you'll notice that the pads had quite a few bits and pieces. And I've made a total of 14 pads of which there are three types, kick, snare/hi-hat/toms and cymbals. This allows me to taylor the kit to different drummers needs (more toms or more tins...).

The biggest outlay was the frame. I struggled at first to find something which I felt was suitable. Others who have tried the same recommended plastic tubing but I didn't fancy that and some used a second hand remo practice set. I ended up finding a company called Fisher Foundries and used their key clamp system along with readily available stainless pipe. Quite expensive really but I was happier with this system because of sturdy way it attaches the pads to the frame.

If you're interested, here's a link to a song I recorded with a band called The-Energy last week using my home made kit. I recorded the drums as MIDI which is quite important because it gives you great flexibilty when it comes to tweeking the drums (mainly editing rogue notes and altering velocity values to get rid of the machine gun effect on toms and snare).

Sort It Out

cool tune.

i've been planning to build an e-drum kit for awhile. one of the hardest things to figure out has been the clamping/frame system. your's looks like it works well. what is the rubber material that you used for the pads? where did you get the clamps?

Thanks for listening:)

I used a natural rubber for the pads... there's a gasket company not for from where I live and he left me have some offcuts (24" discs) for a quid each. I use two layers of 3mm rubber each side of a piece of cloth and this seems to give the pads a better feel.

The frame clamps... might be a problem... They are made over here in the UK so you'll need to either find a similar product over there or find someone who imports Alvin Keyclamps over to the states (assuming that's where you are). I'd have a look on google and see what that shows up.

cheers

UPDATE: I just got this damn thing yesterday 05/05/06, was on backorder since I placed the order and they pushed back the release date twice.

I got my Alesis DM5 kit, the rack is pretty damn well built, and the trigger pads seem to be pretty rugid. The "cymbals" are pretty well constructed and life like as far as motion goes when you hit them. They also seem to change as far as ring and attack when you tighten the wingnut on the top (just like a real cymbal on a stand) though not AS apparent. The bass pedal that comes with the kit is your average run of the mill single chain drive pedal, nothing fancy but it works, capable of some pretty quick bass hits. My only beef is the hi-hat pedal/switch that came with it is pretty flimsy (sp?) it's made of plastic and it doesn't look or feel like something that's going to last very long, but time will tell. Overall, very pleased for the price, and I can add a several more triggers as I expand without needing to buy a bunch of other crap too. I'm still tinkering with settings and what not but I hope to have a clip or two up soon.

they just started shipping . you should see them relatively soon. unless they run out before you get your order filled.

lol sykrotron, whats with the outdoor scene for your drum pictures?
looks like a kickass kit...
is electric the way to go?

How do you like the sounds for recording? Do you have any clips of it? Mine is set up in my basement, but I had to send back the kick pedal because the set-screw for the hammer was crap. It wouldn't tighten down, it just spun. I am hoping to get that back this week.
