Hello,
I was looking into purchasing a Alesis DM5 Pro and was wondering if anyone out there happens to have one and whats your thoughts on it.
I have been doing some research and see a lot of good and some bad.
My main concern is if it sounds like a Casio drum machine or does it sound like a acoustic drum set?
I'm asking because I have to order it online and would hate to spend money on this and have a set that sounds like a rock band drum kit and get charged a restocking fee.

Thanks for any info.

I can't speak specifically about the Alesis but in my experience, nobody uses the stock e-kit samples for recording; $100 will get you EZ Drummer and fantastic samples. The quality of stock samples is becoming less and less relevant, in my opinion at least.

I have one, which I've modified quite a lot. Depends what you're looking for. It's definitely budget kit though but if you're just starting out, or just looking for something to hammer, then it's well worth a look as they're considerably cheaper than the Roland/Yamaha stuff.

Pros

Simple, straight forward kit
DM5 pro module is good and rack mountable
Firmware upgrade(s) available
Stock rubber cymbals are surprisingly good
Kick drum will take a double pedal
Easy to upgrade

Cons

Rack is very flimsy and a nightmare to setup (although pretty solid when up)
Flimsy rack means you can get some false triggering
Some cross-talk, but can solve with tweaking
Stock pads are a bit clicky, but can replace with mesh heads for cheap.
Stock "snare" is too small to be realistic
Couldn't get any dual zone things working - always false triggered

Considering that it's now discontinued, you can probably pick up a bargain and plenty of scope for upgrading at a later date.

Have attached a couple of pics of mine. As you can see I'm running two DM5 modules, and Surge cymbals, and added a 12" snare and used the stock snare as an extra tom.
