All of alesis,s stuff is a cheap way to Record and always has been.
Not that thats a bad thing.

I guess you've never used a VIPRE or a Masterlink.

Wrong Herm. Firstly Alesis had made some great gear over the
years. The Adat changed everything in the world of recording.
It started the whole revolution of quality digital recording for the
masses at home. The Adat is still considered "pro". When the
original black face first came out they would cost over 3 grand
a pop here in the NW, so that can hardly be called cheap. And
Adats have been used for many pro albums over the years.
The Masterlink flat out kicks butt, and is also very pro, being
found in many pro studios and post production houses.
And the new HD24 is a great unit too. Ever heard of light pipe?

If alesis is guilty of anything Herm, it would be of putting
out way too much crap gear (3630...) compared to the few great
contibutions they have made over the years. They seem to be
following this trend unfortunately.

I'm not disputing that they have created some absolute bottom
barrel units, but when someone says ALL Alesis gear is "cheap
and no where near pro gear", and "All of alesis,s stuff is a cheap
way to Record and always has been" I think a little clarification is
in order.

The ADAT is considered the biggest hunk of shit ever invented. It is great at eating tapes though.

Im sorry but Iwas one of those people that bought a new black face and a xt when they came out, 3 years later I was selling them cause All I could hear was their cheap ass digital converters
that sounded harsh as hell.
Im sure everyone remembers thats when everyone and his brother was looking for tube preamps to get some warmth in to their recordings. I will admit I have not heard a new adat 24
But the original adat,s for me anyway still and always will sound like shit.

If it weren't for those original adats, you'd probably still be rubbing sticks together trying to record music... or using a
cassette, in which case I'd choose the sticks.

Nope, I lived completely through that era and before. I was happy with my Tascam 8 and 16 track recorders. Never cared/missed the ADAT. I did have friends that used them and every session began with crossing our fingers that the piece of shit would actually work. We recorded at my house most of the time. The best award the ADAT ever received was the "shit-on-a-stick" award made by Fletcher at the NAMM show some years ago. It, along with the Mackie (another pile in it's own right), were displayed for all to see skewered on a stick together. I wish I had the poster to hang on my wall.

Funny you should mention the Mackie , When I bought the adats
I also bought a new 24/8 mackie. It left soon after the adats did.

Heck Il even stick my neck out and say the 3630 is better sounding gear for what it is than a adat.

It was in 1992 when the ADAT was presented at a show (AES?) and I asked the guy who did the presentation why the sound was so crappy.

Everybody looked at me as if I was from another planet and the guy said something like: "the recording was done under difficult conditions".

On that same show I bought a brand new Tascam MSR24S analog machine, which still works like a charm and has never let me down for a split second.

About the 3630: it can sound quite decent if you know how to use it. It can even sound good if you tweak it. http://www.recording.org/e-mag/article_81.shtml

I dunno. I probably hate ADATs as much as the next guy, having run three blackfaces for a few years and going through all the problems everyone else did. But in spite of all the angst, I was somehow able to make some decent CD's, and make a few clients very happy. I still have one XT20 that I use only for transfers in and out of Pro Tools when the need arises. It seems much more stable than the blackfaces, but I'm also not running it 10 hours a day. (More like 10 hours a year).

On the other hand, I was never able to get even a moment of usefulness out of my 3630. I've heard some people say they sound good on certain specific things. I guess I never found those things.

come on guys, ive been using a micro comp for years as a final b4 master cd with great results. you have to know how to use it correctly ie light compression, and i also use a microverb on a vocal strip. the 3630 i dont know about but for us guys who dont have the $ for a 1k compresser the micro comp serves me fine. also great after a tube pre for bass guit trcks.

Come on guys, the 3630 runs $100 new. For another $75 you can get an RNC. Does that put things in perspective?
